He prepared himself but nothing happened. Literally nothing. He didn’t hear a sound and the door remained closed.

“Maybe she isn’t here?”

Maverick snorted. Reaching out, Maverick turned the knob before he pushed it open. The door creaked and Adam shuddered.

“Who’s there?” a rough, hoarse voice called out.

Maverick stepped forward and Adam followed.

The room stank. Holy shit! It was disgusting.

Lying on a stained old mattress, his mother looked like she’d aged forty years. She had teeth missing, was filthy, and had obviously been drunk or high.

The room was littered with cheap empty bottles and butts of cigarettes.

Adam tried not to gag.

“Hiya, boys. You come to get you something?” She tried to sound sexy, and Adam wanted to puke.

“Hello, Mother,” Maverick said with disdain.

“Mav? Is that you, baby? Did you bring me some money?”

“No, Mother. I already told you that I wouldn’t give you money.”

“Figures. You were always worthless. Who’s that with you?”

Even though it was the last thing he wanted to do, Adam stepped closer to the bed. “Hello, Mother.”

“Adam? Is that you, boy?” She crawled closer.

He looked away, realizing that she was more than half-naked. “Yes.”

“You have money for me, baby?”

“No.” Adam glanced back at her from the corner of his eye. “I won’t give you any money.”

“Piece of shit,” she spat. “You were always a loser. A whiny baby. Not good for anything.”

“Nice,” Maverick muttered. “Real nice, Mother.”

“If you’re not here to give me money, what do you want?”

This was his chance. Adam finally looked in her eyes, but she wasn’t all there. The woman that had tormented him was long gone. Only a shell of what she used to be. Maverick was right. Adam didn’t need to see this. “I just wanted to tell you that it’s over. Your ex-husband has been arrested along with the rest of his congregation. The church is shut down.”

“My Jimmy?” his mother said. “Where’s my Jimmy?”

“In jail, where he’ll spend the rest of his life.”

“Lies!” his mother screamed.

Adam was done. He took a step back. “You are all alone, Mother. No one to come look for you again. Have a nice life.”

“Get the fuck out!” his mother shouted.

“Gladly.” Maverick kicked empty bottles out of his way before he ushered Adam forward.

Adam gratefully followed as his mother’s cries and threats were screamed behind them. He had no problem walking away like he’d done before all those years ago. This time Adam wasn’t scared. Adam wasn’t all alone, afraid of what would happen to him. He was going home with the two men that he loved.
