EXCERPT FROM POISONWOOD

POISONWOOD & LYRIC BOOK ONE

Jasper had never been hungrier, and the city of Lyric was full to the brink of tantalizing life. There were indie musicians hitting the pavement, hoping to be discovered playing in dive bars and willing to settle on a different kind of attention, hedge fund managers who desperately needed to unwind, people looking for someone to fill a void or entertain them for a night. He could smell sex everywhere, and it was killing him.

He stood in the kitchen, his arms crossed, wondering if the seals around the apartment’s windows and doors were broken. Alluring as Lyric’s citizens were, the urge to run out into the night and cut a hot, sweaty path through sex-starved mortals shouldn’t be so strong.

“Thirsty?” a female voice asked behind him.

His sister Sasha wrapped her arm around his shoulder and swung around to his front, nearly toppling them both over. A demon at his best wouldn’t even notice the weight of spritely Sasha, but a starving incubus was weaker than a human. He only caught himself when she gracefully landed on the balls of her feet, and he could steady by leaning on her.

With a self-deprecating laugh, Jasper rubbed the back of his neck. “Sorry. Caught me off guard there, sis.”

She arched one thick black brow at him. “Did I?” Then, she was on him again, in his space. That was the thing about incubi—they were touchers. In the decade since his demon side had woken, he’d adjusted to it. Hell, it was nice most of the time. He still flinched back when she touched his forehead. “How are you feeling? You look pale.”

“I’m fine,” Jasper said.
