“Who?”

Damn, now he was doing it.

“You and me. About what you left out about last night.” The life or death part. “We can talk in the car.”

In an enclosed space where he couldn’t get away or distract her. That day, she hoped, would be enlightening on many levels. As frustrating as unknowns could be, there was an exhilaration to progress. Even incremental progress.

Dressing as fast as she could, she blasted her hair with the blow-dryer and skimped on the makeup. Given Jagg had known her since, well, forever, she didn’t need to go out of her way to dress up for him.

They got in the car, drove off his property, and still his mouth hadn’t opened.

“Did you speak to Ford?” Yes, she wanted to talk about the fire. She also wanted to know if her brother had been lobotomized. “This morning?”

“You saw me talk to him.”

“No, before that. Before I got up.”

“No. I told you I didn’t.”

Maybe he’d been protecting her. “How can he be so cool about this? About us?”

“We should take the win.”

“It’s not a win if we don’t understand it. Is it a trick?”

“A trick?” he asked, almost snickering. “He knows we’re together, what is he tricking us into?”

“I just don’t get it.”

“Let him adjust. Maybe he’ll yell at you later.”

“He already thinks I’m the problem. Can you believe he accused me of being on the rebound?”

“You are on the rebound.”

“I am not! Lach and I broke up months ago.”

“You been with another guy since?”

“Yes.”

He frowned. “Who?”

“You,” she said. His expression relaxed again. “I am not on the rebound. This is not a rebound. Why would you be with me if you think you’re a rebound?”

“You told him about us? The cop. Have you told him?”

“Lach?” she asked. “When have I had the chance to do that? And if I tell him, he’ll tell Sersha… which means Dad will find out.”

“Your dad will find out eventually. He’s got his finger on the pulse. You know it’ll get back to him sooner rather than later.”

Strat had an easy-going, non-threatening attitude that drew people in. A guy like him, everyone’s best friend, people just told him things. So, yeah, he would find out. They couldn’t keep them a secret forever.

“Should we get in front of it?”

“Tell him?” Jagg asked. “If you want.”

“Do you think Ford will?”
