“Don’t put yourself in danger. I’ve got people on the way there.

“You’ve got people on the way to potentially the biggest riot this city has seen for years, but you don’t want me there?”

“These are unofficial guys, Imogen. Guys who can watch and take care of themselves if they have to. Your father would never accept you being hurt on my order.”

“It’s not an order. I was going there anyway.”

“Sersha’s on her way—”

“You’d put Sersha in danger, but not me?”

“She’s on her way in,” he said, unimpressed. “I was going to say Sersha is on her way into the office.”

“You want to give her the story?”

“She has the connections to find out—”

“It’s a lot of pressure for just one person.” She landed a hand on the dashboard when Jagg took an unexpected right. “What are you doing?” He didn’t answer. Maybe he thought she was still talking to Steeple. “I’ll call you back.” She hung up. “Jagg, where are we going?”

“Home.”

“Why home? What is—”

“You used the word ‘riot,’ baby, and there are cops out there. That means guns.”

“And you think I’m not savvy enough to avoid getting shot?”

“Getting shot doesn’t work that way. Besides, I like this car. You want to roll in front of water cannons, get your brother’s keys.”

Though she wanted to argue against him and her boss, she didn’t have control of the car or the situation. And her worries were nothing.

Switching perspective, someone else might be in a lot of trouble: Sersha. If the Manzanis ever found out how the fire started…

“We should’ve asked Lachlan about Marseille.”

“Guy didn’t seem like he wanted to talk.”

No, because she’d revealed them. “I’ll call him later, when he’s calmed down. Do you know if Ford is at the garage?”

“I’m guessing yes, since Ditzy Daisy was due over there.”

“Do they have a thing? Is she the woman you thought he’d be sleeping with the other night?”

“No,” he said, his hands sliding down to the bottom of the wheel. “Every guy and their neighbor wants a shot on that pony ride, but she’s feisty.”

“What does that mean?” Not that she cared exactly. “Is Hustle open tonight?”

“Think that’s a good idea?”

“The Manzanis are the key to this.”

“Not Vex.”

“How else do I get close to Bryan? Yvonne Ingham was definitely at the club the night we went there. Why would she be there if Vex isn’t involved?”

“The Carlyle might not be Vex’s operation, but there’s plenty of crossover of guys.”

“Why wouldn’t she have asked for help? Called out and come with us?”
