“I’m grateful, for all you did and…”

“Yeah, yeah,” Sersha said. “We do what we can.”

Okay, she didn’t want it to get awkward.

Just one more thing to… She took her apartment keys from her bag. “Can you give these to Lachlan, please? He got his stuff out already and Jagg got the last of mine with Ford. We paid the year up front, but he should try to get some money back.”

“This is Lachlan we’re talking about.” Sersha took the keys to put them in her pocket. “He’d probably end up giving the guy more money.”

She smiled. “Thanks.” Clearing her throat, she stepped back. “We shouldn’t miss Steeple’s meeting.”

“No, better to catch the ones we can,” Sersha said and they both got up. She stopped by the door. “You did good, Stratford.”

“Would you have done the same? Written a half-truth to protect the people you care about?”

Sersha smiled. “The people I care about make trouble all of their own. Keeps life interesting.”

Yes, and terrifying. If Sersha could do it, so could she. And even if the confidence wasn’t entirely authentic, Jagg’s love would get her by.
