“Me too.”

“Hey!” she exclaimed, closing the laptop on Jagg’s thighs, blackening the TV. “Who is Ludlow?”

“Buddy of Strat’s. They were tight for years.”

“Then he just disappeared one day.”

“And we didn’t ask.”

Or Jagg tried to and Strat hadn’t filled him in.

“You’re telling me that my father… that Kurt Stratford is friends with someone you saw on there?” She jabbed a thumb toward the blank TV. “Dad? My dad? Our dad?”

“Used to be friends. What is it?”

“Driving the cab,” Jagg said, meeting her eye. “He’s driving the cab.”

Thus far their attempts to get a plate or ID anyone had been unsuccessful. See! If Jagg had been more interested in the TV than her underwear…

No time for that kind of thinking.

She jumped to her feet. “I have to go.”

“You have to go where?” Ford asked.

Purse. Shoes. “Dad’s.”

“You’re going to Dad’s?”

“Is that so unbelievable?”

“The way you’ve been with him recently, yeah. Him and Lud haven’t spoken for a few years.”

“We don’t know that for sure.”

And there was Jagg, right at her back.

“Can’t hurt to check,” she said, all innocence. “It’ll give me an excuse to judge him face-to-face. A little of his own medicine.”

Adrenaline fueled her certainty. Did she want to see her dad? No. But one step followed another. Talking to him was progress toward cracking the case. Her personal feelings didn’t matter.

“Well, wait a minute, I’ll go with you.”

“Why do you need to come with me? Dad’s not going to do anything to me.”

“And you?” Ford asked. “What are you gonna do?”

Not flatten him. Not unnecessarily anyway.

“Fine. Come with me. But if you two start conspiring against me, I’m out of there.” Her brother picked up his coffee like they had all the time in the world. “If you’re coming, come now.”

“I’m coming.”

And yet, he hadn’t moved.

Stomping around the counter, she snatched his coffee cup to pour the java away. “I will buy you a new one.” His wrist in her fist, she pulled him along. “We’ve got to get moving.”

Her dad could know where this Ludlow dude was, what he was up to, and who he hung out with. For all the issues she had with her father, the guy had his ear to the ground. He’d know something. Though when he heard about what she’d been getting involved in… She wasn’t a baby anymore and wouldn’t let him bully her.
