She swallowed. “Silvio knows you’re helping me.”

“How do you know that?” His lips barely moved; the growl in them tightened her muscles. “Imogen, how do you know Silvio knows?”

“Well, I guess I, I don’t know that Silvio knows, but… Swerve knows.”

“The fuck,” he snarled. “He came to you? How the fuck did he get near you?”

“This is not something to be angry about, it’s good, we know he knows and—”

“Yeah, it’s fucking good,” he barked and whirled around to go storming out of the room.

“Jagg!” Going after him, she couldn’t keep up. “You don’t—please—”

Without hesitating, he slammed out of the apartment.

“What happened?” Sersha asked, coming around the breakfast bar.

She sighed. “I told him.”

“Oh.”

“Told him?” her father demanded. “Told him what?”

“Nothing I’ll tell you.”

“You will tell me. If he didn’t want to do it, why did he volunteer?”

“We can’t. I can’t let him and Ford go to Silvio for a phony meet.”

“You’re worried about them? Sweetheart, they—”

“Silvio knows,” she said, making eye contact with Sersha. Maybe with an ally, she could stop her father having the same reaction as Jagg. “Swerve knows Jagg and Ford are helping me.”

Her brother’s name hadn’t come up, but it wasn’t a leap. As had just been said, they were peas in a pod back in the day. Well, not just then. Things hadn’t changed much.

“How do you know Swerve knows?” he asked, coming a step closer. “Swerve approached you?”

Her father was bringing his own bubble to a boil.

“Don’t,” she said before he could vent any steam. “Don’t explode like he did. I wasn’t going to tell you because I knew you’d freak out. Why ask me to be honest and then explode when I am? That’s no incentive for me to tell you the truth.”

Sucking in a nasal inhale, his spine straightened, and his eyes went to Sersha’s. Did he want an ally too? Wasn’t great that she was in the middle.

Rather than shout or scold, he pushed the air from his lungs, muttering something. Then, like Jagg, he went stomping toward the door.

She hurried into his path. “Where are you going?”

“You want Jagg and your brother in jail?”

“No!”

“Then I’ve gotta put the pin back in the grenade.” He swept his head aside in a nod. “Outta the way.”

Putting her palms together, she stepped aside and he left.

Sersha went to retrieve a bottle from a kitchen cabinet. “Whiskey?”

Hard liquor was just what she needed. “Why not? I can’t screw up this day more than I already have.”
