“Nice night for a walk, huh?”

That was all she heard Swerve say before the door closed and the guys started down the sidewalk. A good ten feet away, they paused. What was going on? They got a little closer to each other. Was that aggression? If they fought… She couldn’t call the cops or Jagg might get arrested.

Ford would race over there, and a fight would be inevitable.

Strat.

Slipping her phone from her pocket, she scrolled to her dad’s number and pressed call on speaker, volume low. Putting the device to her ear would be risky. If Swerve saw it, he might assume she was calling the cops.

“Immie?” Her dad’s gruff, tired voice came before a cough. “What’s going on?”

“Sorry,” she whispered into the phone. “I forgot the time.”

“I don’t care about the time. What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know, maybe… nothing. I don’t—”

“Sweetheart, whatever it is, tell me.”

“You won’t get mad?”

“I won’t get mad. What you said earlier was right. Getting mad gets us nowhere.”

And provides no incentive for her to be honest. “I came to the Carlyle.”

“Alone?” Movement on the line suggested he was up, maybe getting dressed. “Are you inside?”

“No, I’m outside. Jagg came with me and—”

“Put him on the phone.”

“No, you can’t get mad at him either. He came to look after me. He came so I wouldn’t come alone. But he’s… Swerve appeared at the car. They’re outside talking. What do I do? Call the cops? Lachlan?”

“Are they fighting?”

“No, they’re just standing there… talking.” Neither guy’s expression gave away much other than they were talking tough. “What if he hits him? What if he does something else or other guys show up and—”

“I’m on my way.” A door closed. “Did you call your brother?”

“No, should I? I didn’t want to escalate the situation. I should’ve called him, shouldn’t I? Damnit.”

“It’s okay. You did the right thing. Are you in the car?”

“Yes.”

“Can they see you?”

“They’re not looking over here, they’re looking at each other. He’s not going to get shot, is he? Someone could be in the hotel and—”

“Are the keys there? The car keys?”

“Yes.” Where Jagg left them, right there, for her. “He told me not to get out of the car.”

“Don’t. Good. Stay there. Slide over to the driver’s side.”

“I’m not going to leave him here or run anyone over.”

“You can be ready to move, to—”
