“He’s more likely to pee up your leg,” Eileen said.

“As long as his wolf doesn’t shag it, we’re good,” Heather said.

That time Eileen did chuckle. “You’re the trouble one,” she said, wagging a finger at her. “I’m going to have to watch out for you.”

“In a good, protective way, right?” Heather asked, but the she-wolf didn’t reply, she just walked off. “Yeah, that’s what I thought,” Heather muttered, bringing the bottle to her lips and drinking hard and fast as she eyed the room for trouble. It was an old habit that she performed in her bar every night, and she couldn’t let it slide just because this wasn’t her place.

Heather was always ready for trouble, and she liked it that way.

“Where did Heather go?” Zoe asked when Maria walked into the living room and eyed the chocolate cake that Zoe was about to put under glass.

“Three guesses,” Maria said. “But, I somehow don’t think you’re going to need them.”

“Bar,” Zoe said.

“Bingo.”

“Retreat to what you know,” Zoe said, shrugging.

Maria slipped up onto the stool at the counter and rested her chin on her upturned hands. “Break a few heads, less stress, unwind.”

“As far as I know, there’s only one pub in town, and that’s Eileen’s place,” Zoe said, raising her eyebrows at Maria as she waited for her to catch up.

Maria screwed up her face. “Breaking shifter heads doesn’t seem like a good idea right now.”

“My thoughts exactly,” Zoe said.

Maria hopped down from the stool. “Rescue mission?”

“Rescue Heather?” Zoe snorted a chuckle.

“I wasn’t thinking about Heather,” Maria said. “I’d hate to be the shifter who tangled with her right now.”

Zoe winced. “Let’s go,” she said, sighing. “I just hope the egg man isn’t there.”

Maria frowned. “I thought you liked him?” Zoe’s eyebrows shot up. “Or not,” Maria rushed out, heading for the front door.

Maria pushed open the door to the bar, and the smell of alcohol greeted her, along with the soft rock track playing from the concealed speakers and the chatter of the packed room.

Zoe sidled up to her, and her jaw hung slack as she stared at the bar. “No fricking way,” she said, twisting her head to the side and eyeing Heather.

“When in Rome,” Maria said, screwing up her face.

“How’d that happen?” Zoe said, watching her friend standing behind the bar, expertly spinning two bottles of Jack in her hands before she went in for the fast pour.

“She’s working here now?” Maria said as if she was confirming what her eyes were seeing.

“She’s working here now,” Zoe said with a big dollop of disbelief.

They turned to look at each other. “Breaking heads,” they said, nodding.

“Well, if you can’t beat them,” Maria said, shrugging.

“Join them,” Zoe said, hooking Maria’s arm and starting for the bar.
