“Well, fairies repay a debt, so if you need anything,” she said, turning to leave.

“Wait, what happened? Why were you here?”

“The alpha’s pack cut down our homes; my home is sitting in your cabin,” Anya said, and the shocked look on Maria’s face made Anya smile. “It’s okay; thanks to your friend, the alpha agreed to leave our trees alone forever, so I got me a new home now.”

“He did, you do?” Maria was happy to hear that, she was just sad that she hadn’t been able to help. “That’s great.”

“If you ever need me, Kristen knows where to find me in the woods,” Anya said. “I will return the kindness.” Then her wings came out; she flapped them twice and was gone.

“Whoa,” Maria said, impressed. “Maybe there is something to this rural life after all.”

CHAPTER TWO

~

“A fairy?” Heather said, hands on hips and looking at Maria like she’d got into the booze a little too early in the day. “The cat?”

Zoe was busy putting away the shopping when she came to the eggs and stopped, grimacing. “Oh, poop,” she said. The others stared at her. “I didn’t give the shifter half the eggs.”

“Boo-hoo, for him,” Heather said, snorting a chuckle. “That means you can make more cakes.”

Zoe frowned. “Do you remember the last time I miffed off a shifter?” she asked.

Heather and Maria looked at each other. “Well, I’m not answering the door if he comes knocking,” Heather said, stepping back.

“Me either. I had enough of a shock with the cat fairy or fairy cat this morning; I don’t need a big oaf shifter up in my face,” Maria said.

“Up in your face?” Heather asked, snorting a chuckle.

“I hear it on TV shows all the time,” Maria said. “I thought I’d try it out.”

“Yeah,” Heather said, nodding. “Don’t do that.”

“So, what happened with the cat fairy, fairy cat?” Zoe asked, putting the eggs to one side just in case he decided to hunt them down.

“Robert’s pack chopped down her home,” Maria said and pointed at the tree.

“Wow, that’s cold,” Zoe said.

“It’s snowed; it would be cold without a home,” Heather said, grinning.

“But, apparently, our Kristen sorted it all out, and now they have homes the pack won’t chop down,” Maria said.

“Yea, for Kristen,” Zoe said. Then frowned. “Any word from her yet?”

Maria shook her head. “Not a thing.”

“I guess she’s having more fun today than she had last night,” Heather said. “Which is good for me; it means I get more cake.”

“Which makes your hips bigger, and the fairy said you nearly flattened her when you almost sat on her the other night,” Maria said, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

“That’s not funny,” Heather said.

“Wide load backing up,” Zoe said, snorting a chuckle.

“If a stupid fairy wants to shift into a cat and play silly games, then she should expect to go splat,” Heather said. “And I’m not sorry.”

“I think I like the fairy better than I like you right now,” Maria said.
