Kristen had taken that step. Was she too chicken to even kiss him?

Was he too chicken to try to kiss her?

Then he brought his lips down on hers. A rush of tingles spread across her body, a kick of excitement fuelled by adrenaline, and a whoosh of heat rushed through her and set her body alight.

Then the strangest thing happened, her toes curled within her socks, her knees felt like they were melting, and she had to lean into him for fear of ending up in a mushy puddle on the floor at his feet.

As he deepened the kiss, her body naturally responded.

They say curiosity killed the cat, but sometimes, it got you into a whole heap more trouble than that.

“You drove off and left me holding your bumper,” Duncan said, sliding up onto the stool beside Heather.

Heather raised her eyebrows as she picked at the label on her bottle of beer. “Yep,” she said, matter of fact.

“That’s not very friendly after I helped you out,” Duncan said.

Heather slowly turned towards him. He waited, curious. “What made you think I was friendly?”

Duncan allowed himself a smile. “You are not as mean as you like people to think you are.”

Heather chuckled. “I’ve heard that before.”

“And?”

Heather leaned in a little as if she was about to share a secret. “And I prove them wrong every single time,” she said.

When Heather pulled back, he was smiling. She wasn’t sure why; most people would generally run a mile at that point, and he was still sitting there.

Then Duncan leaned in. “Then how come you’ve had three very loyal friends for decades?” He twisted on the stool, dropped down, and walked away to let her mull that one over.

Heather opened her mouth, lifted her witching finger, but she was stumped. Nobody had ever pointed that out to her before. Then her defence system clicked in. “Maybe they are too scared to tell me to bug off,” she said and noted how he hesitated in his stride.

He’d heard her as she knew he would.

Gotcha, she thought, smiling to herself.

“I’m back,” Maria said, sliding onto a stool after her bathroom break. “What did he want?”

“Redemption,” she said.

“His?” Maria asked, confused.

“Mine.”

“Whoa now,” Billy said, holding up his hands and eyeing his mate.

A frown flicked across Zoe’s brow, but she was eyeing him as if she’d never seen him before. “Not a horse.”

“Nope, but you look like you are about to bolt,” Billy said.

Strangely, she didn’t feel like that. She was trying to process those kisses and how far they got from curiosity to hands everywhere. “You kissed me,” she said, voicing her thoughts.

“Yeah.” Billy was still mulling that one over himself.
