“Something like that,” Billy replied.

Carter scowled. “The egg stealer?”

Billy nodded. “I think so.”

“Well, if it’s just eggs, you got off lightly,” Eileen said. “Unload the kill in the barn. We’ll get to it later, and if you see your brother.”

“Laugh our butts off to his face?” Carter said, grinning until Eileen gave him a deadly stare. “Or not.”

“Be nice to the mate,” Eileen said, rolling her eyes. “It appears a witch is for life and not just Christmas dinner,” she said, turning on her heels and heading back into the cabin.

“Damn, you know what this means?” Billy said, annoyed.

“We’ve got a witch sister-in-law?”

“We missed our brother, thealpha, making an ass out of himself,” Billy said.

“That is very disappointing,” Carter said.

“Oh shoot!” Zoe said, entering the room on fast feet.

“You came flying down those stairs without a broomstick; well done,” Heather said, grinning at Maria before she popped a cheesy bite into her mouth and chewed fast.

The only thing she liked to eat slowly was chocolate cake, but she savoured every bite because she didn’t know where the next slice was coming from, especially with Zoe being on her morality strike.

Maria eyed Zoe, and the witch looked a little flustered. “What’s got you rattled?”

“Not what, who,” Zoe said. “That guy from the shop is walking up the drive like he owns the world.”

“That armpit sniffer?” Heather said, making her way to the window when she noticed Zoe fluff her hair and flick it back over her shoulders.

“The very same,” Zoe said, climbing onto her high horse.

“Oh, my God,” Heather said, and the others turned to look at her. She was eyeing Zoe as if the witch was doing a handstand while juggling oranges with her feet.

Zoe looked down at her body, smoothed her sweater over her hips, and returned her gaze to Heather. “What?” She flicked her hair back over her shoulders.

Heather pulled her head back. “Oh, wow, you did it again,” she said, bemused and somewhat bewildered.

Zoe widened her eyes and gave her friend an expectant stare. “Please share and toot sweet before the armpit-sniffing Viking guy hammers the door down.”

Heather’s eyebrows reached for her hairline, and she mocked her friend with a grin. “You fluffed and flicked your hair.”

“Well, that has to be a hanging offence right there,” Maria said, a little disappointed that there wasn’t more to it than that.

“You like him,” Heather said, curling her lip in mock disgust and a little shock.

Zoe snapped rigid; nothing moved but her eyelids as she blinked three times. “Huh?”

CHAPTER THREE

~

“I know that move,” Heather said, waving her witching finger around like a wand. “You fancy the pants off that guy.”

“Do not!” Zoe said, slightly offended that her friend would call her out on something that was in no way true.
