She stepped behind a tree and gripped the taser. She could do this. She’d trained for the time when she’d have to fight for her life. Granted, this wasn’t the person she thought she’d be confronting, but the concept was the same.

Raina glanced around the trunk. The shooter came closer, following the path she’d left behind in the snow, just as she figured would happen.

The snow boots crunched their way toward Raina, one step at a time. The gun in the gloved hand was held in a grip thatsaid the attacker knew how to use it. The second bullet from the weapon had certainly nailed Keith without any trouble.

Which meant, she couldn’t give the person a target.

Please, God, I know I’ve had a hard time trusting you, but I still believe andpray you plan to deliver me from this. If not... okay. Just make sure Vince knows this isn’t hisfault because he’s going to blame himself.

As she prayed, the attacker advanced. And for the first time, Raina got a good glimpse of the heavily dressed individual. The bulky clothes couldn’t hide the slim figure underneath.

She blinked.

The person trying to kill her wasa woman?

And then there was no more time to process as she stepped through the tree line and Raina fired the taser.

And missed.

The woman swung around and fired the gun. The bullet hit the trunk next to Raina’s cheek, blasting her face with particles of wood.

Heart pounding, Raina turned and ran, doing her best to keep herself next to thick trees. The next gunshot echoed, the bullet slamming into the tree in front of her. Raina darted to the right, pushing off the nearest trunk and heading for the big oak just ahead.

She whirled behind it, panting, looking for a weapon. A thick limb about the length of a baseball bat lay five feet away from her and she knelt to grab it.

God, please!

She wouldn’t get another chance.

“It’s no use, Raina,” the woman said, her voice coming from the other side of the huge tree. “You’re just prolonging the inevitable.”

“Why are you doing this? Who are you? What did I ever do to you?”

“Your very existence is a threat to my future. As was Keith’s. I took care of him and now you’re the only one left.”

Raina whipped her head left, then right. Nowhere to run that wouldn’t leave her exposed. She tightened her grip around the limb. “Keith was a killer.”

“I know. Trust me. I know. But he enjoyed it. I don’t. I didn’t want to kill him, but he simply left me no choice.”

“And what did I do?”

“He was determined to find that kid of his. And you, I’m sure.”

“Hedidfind me. Us. How did you findus?”

“I tracked his phone. I figured it would come in handy one day, so I took it when he wasn’t looking and shared his location with me. Easy enough. Thankfully, he never noticed. Now, come on out and I’ll make this as painless as possible.”

That would be a hard no. The woman started moving once more, and Raina glanced around the trunk to see the distance. “I’m not coming out. You’ll have to come get me.”

A sigh sounded from her. “Fine. I’m the one with the gun, remember?”

Oh, she remembered.Just keep walking. Please keep walking.

The woman did. And then there was nothing but quiet.

Raina waited for the sound of more footsteps.

Nothing.
