He kissed the top of her head. “I was terrified I was going to lose you.”

“I was pretty terrified myself.” A pause. “How did you find me?”

He took a deep breath. “Well, it’s kind of a long story, but the guy who kidnapped me—”

She jerked back. “What!”

“—and threw me in the pretty spacious trunk of his sedan—”

She gaped.

“—wasn’t an idiot by any stretch of the imagination, but he made three mistakes. One, he didn’t use enough of the drug to keep me knocked out for very long, and two, he didn’t bother to tie me up—”

“And three?”

“He had this address programmed into the rental car’s GPS.Once I knocked him out and dumped him in his own trunk, I finished the drive.”

She blinked. Once. Twice. “What?”

“What part do I need to repeat?”

Finally, she snapped her lips closed and shook her head. “Who kidnapped you?Whydid he kidnap you? And is Michael okay?”

“Michael is fine. I don’t know who the guy is, but he’s in custody, so hopefully we’ll have an ID and he’ll start talking soon. But whoever he is, he was working with someone here and it wasn’t Kevin.”

“Keith,” she murmured.

“What?”

“Kevin is Keith Baldridge.”

“Oh. Right. Yeah, we figured that part out. Anyway, my kidnapper must have been working with the woman. I overheard them talking, and they’d taken me to lure you to wherever they planned to take me. Only Kevin—Keith—got to you first and they knew it.”

“And the woman knew where Keith was because she tracked his phone. She told me that much.”

His hand gripped hers. “That phone might just give us some answers as to what’s going on.”

“Like why my very existence was a threat to her? I mean, I can understand Keith’s existence being a threat. After all, if it came out that her governor-wannabe husband’s brother was a serial killer, that might just turn the tide of the election. And not the way she would want.”

“Exactly.”

“Now that I think about it, I guess since I was the only one who could ID Keith as the one who almost killed me, that wouldn’t be good for an election either. If I was dead, there wouldn’t be any more threats to her husband’s bid for governor.”

“Good point.” He ran a finger down her cheek and pulled her into a tight hug. He might never let her go. “Officers are going over her car. One way or another, we’ll have some answers.”

“Good. I need answers.”

Joseph walked over to them with his hand held out for Raina to shake. Which meant Vince had to release her. He frowned.

“You all right?” the man asked Raina.

“I will be.”

“I just got a message that Mr. and Mrs. Harrison want to talk to you.”
