“If you think this guy Kevin is going to be looking for Michael—should he know about him—and he finds out the family was warned about him by an anonymous party, it might not take much for him to find out where the tip came from. I mean, there might be several people who know his true nature—family, the women in his past, the child’s mother, et cetera. But if he decides to find out who the tipster is, it wouldn’t be impossible for him to track this back to you—or at least turn his focus back to you.”

“I know. I’ve thought of that, but the truth is, I’m not sure his focus ever left me. He just didn’t know how to find me.”

“Raina?” Another voice came through the line. He thought it was Holly.

Raina’s voice faded for a minute, then came back to him. “I’ve got to go in about three minutes. There’s a wreck on the interstate with multiple injuries.”

“I thought you were off today.”

“I’m the backup. Guess they need backup. One last thing though, in regard to Kevin, I’ve also thought that I can’t be his only victim. If he did what he did to me, it’s highly likely he did it to someone else.”

“Yeah, someone who had his child.”

“Right.” She blew out a shaky breath. “I tried to find him sohe could be stopped, Vince, I did. The leads just went nowhere.” The unshed tears in her low voice nearly shredded his heart.

“Hey, don’t focus on that,” he said. “You did what you had to do to survive. But there may come a time when things get dicey. You could very well come face-to-face with him at some point.”

“I’ve thought of that too.” She cleared her throat. “But ... what am I supposed to do? Just hope that Kevin doesn’t find out? Take that risk and simply assume the child will be safe?”

Vince shook his head. No, that would never be an option for her. “Of course not.”

“Okay, I’m not panicking over this for nothing. I think there’s serious urgency here to warn this family, but maybe thinking Kevin can somehow connect this to me is a paranoid stretch. I mean, he has no clue where I am or if I’m even still alive.”

“You sound sure.”

“I am. About that.” She fell silent and he could almost picture her chewing on her lip. “I mean, if he knew where I was, he’d be here.” Another pause. “And even if there was a chance it was possible, even if there’s something I’m not thinking of, I still have to risk it and warn these people he’s out there.”

“Then let’s warn them and find him. We’ll deal with any fallout after.”

“That was basically my plan—at least until I could come up with a better one. I’ve really got to go. I need to be on the chopper in about thirty seconds.”

She was always thinking ahead. “Okay then. Meet you tonight for dinner? We might need to strategize.”

“I thought you were babysitting.”

“Just for another few hours.”

“Okay then, where do you want to meet?”

“The Bad Burger Barn?”

“One of my favorites.”

He knew that. It was why he’d chosen it.

“We’re in the air in one!” The voice sounded distant and he could hear Raina running.

“Six o’clock?” he asked.

“Depending on how long this takes, I’ll be there.” The roar of churning chopper blades split the air. “If not, you know why.”

“Be safe.”

“Will do my best. See you in a few hours. Bye.”

She hung up and Vince did the same, blowing out a low breath. He walked back into the living area and secured the balcony doors.

Charlie looked up from his laptop. “Everything okay?”
