“I’ll explain later. Right now, doctors are working on her to make sure she keeps breathing and minimize the effects of the drug. I need cops to get security footage and track this person down.”

“Okay. Right. Wow. I’ll call Gabrielle Perez. She’s a detective buddy of mine.”

“Great. I’ll be looking for her.” He hung up and stalked to room 5, where he stopped just outside and leaned against the wall to text Charlie an update. Once that was done, he called his supervisor and asked for someone to take his spot ASAP, since he was going to be busy giving his statement and making sure Raina was taken care of. The man granted it.

And then Vince bowed his head and prayed.

After what felt like a lifetime, but was only fifteen minutes later according to the clock on his phone, the doctor emerged.

“How is she?” Vince asked.

“Stable. Breathing better. Hopefully, in an hour or so, she’ll wake up.”

“Thanks.”

The doctor walked toward the nurses’ station, and Vince caught sight of Penny and Holly heading his way.

“Is she okay?” Holly asked.

“Yeah. Or she will be.”

Penny rubbed the worry lines creasing her forehead. “How in the world did she get dosed with GHB?”

He held up the cup. “I think in this. She was drinking out of it earlier.”

“She always has a cup of water going,” Penny said. “Keeps it on the counter at the workstation. Anyone could get access to it if they really wanted to.”

“And apparently someone did.”

Holly frowned. “But why? Who would do such a thing? Especially to Raina.”

“No idea,” Penny said. “But I’d give anything to see the security footage.”

Vince nodded. “Already ahead of you. As soon as I’m sure Raina’s going to be all right, I’m going to ask to watch it.”

“I’ll stay here,” Holly said. “Go watch it.”

“You’re sure?”

“Of course.”

Penny backed toward the elevator. “I’ll head back to base. Holly, keep your phone close and text me if there’s any change or she wakes up, please?”

“Yes. For sure. And if we get a call, I’ll come running.”

Penny left and Vince checked in on Raina to find her still unconscious. He squeezed her hand. “I’m going to figure out who did this to you, Raina. Hang in there. I’ll be right back.”

Vince made his way down to the security office where he located one of the officers sitting in front of the computer, playing the footage for a woman with a badge on her belt. “Gabrielle Perez?” he asked.

“Vince Covelli?”

“That’s me.” He shook her outstretched hand. “I owe Clay for asking you to come.”

“Happy to do it.” She nodded to the television screen. “Getting ready to see what we can see.”

“All right, let’s take a look.” The officer clicked a key, and the footage rewound to the moment Raina arrived in the ER and set her cup on the counter next to one of the computer stations. “There’s nothing for a while, then this. Watch that person right there.” He tapped the screen with his index finger, and Vince narrowed his eyes.

“I can’t make the person out.”
