“Did the others have one?” She took a deep breath and fanned the pictures out in front of her.

“Uh, I don’t think it was mentioned,” Holt said. “But that doesn’t mean they didn’t have one.”

She pointed. “He gave me a ring just like that.”

“What?” Holt and Vince spoke the word at the same time and leaned forward. Steeling herself, she flipped through the pictures of the other victims. “No ring, but like you said, that doesn’t mean he didn’t give them one.” She paused and let out a low breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. “He did this to these women and he did it to me. And we have to stop him.”

CHAPTER

TWELVE

“We?” Vince raised a brow at her while, at the same time, clamping down on the desire to find this guy and give him a taste of his own medicine. But that wasn’t how he operated. At least not up to this point. He wasn’t sure what he’d do if he ever came face-to-face with the man who’d almost killed Raina.

“Yes. I told you that if you couldn’t find him, I wanted to use myself as bait.”

Holt held up a hand. “You gave us something we didn’t have before. We now can investigate the ring. Do you still have it?”

“No. At least not with me. It ... might be in a jewelry box I used to have. I honestly don’t know what happened to all the stuff I had at the apartment I shared with Kevin. My dad said he’d get it, so he probably did. You can ask him, but I worry about you contacting him and Kevin finding out somehow.”

“I’ll manage,” Holt said. “Will you trust me to do that?”

She bit her lip and glanced between the two men. “I guess, but doing that is going to take some time. I still think I should ... do something.”

Vince exchanged a look with Holt. “What does thatsomethingentail?”

She sat back in the chair with a huff. “I have no idea.” But her eyes narrowed and she straightened. “Wait a minute. Maybe I do.”

“What?” Holt asked.

“The guy the cops are questioning at the jail.”

“Freddy Harper.” Vince frowned. “What about him?”

“He’s probably working for Kevin, right?”

“Possibly.”

“What if I talk to him?”

“Uh...” Holt shook his head. “I think that’s a bad idea.”

“What’s he like? His personality?”

“I’m not sure. They haven’t said.”

Raina stood. “I’m going down there. I want to see him.”

Vince and Holt rose as well. “Raina, he’s not going to talk to you either,” Vince said.

“How do you know that? What if my appearance is a shock to his system or something? Maybe it will jar him into saying something.”

“That’s what the detectives investigating your case are trying to do,” Holt said. “I’m buddies with one of them. His name is Ryan Byrd and he promised to keep me updated.”

She hesitated, then lifted her chin. “I still want to go.”

“Then let’s go,” Vince said, pulling his keys from his pocket.

Raina’s eyes widened, but she nodded and headed for her bedroom. “Give me ten minutes.”
