“No kidding.”

She checked her phone. Still no call from the one person who might be able to find the boy’s family and warn them.

And the text from Vince glared at her. Why hadn’t she answered him? He was just being kind.

And she was not.

“Give me a second, okay?” she asked.

“Sure.” RJ screwed the cap off his water bottle and swigged.

Frustrated with herself, Raina tapped out,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I’m okay. I’m at the gym. Hope you’re having a good day.

Too vague? Too distant? Should she be more personal?

Quit overthinking it!

Before she could change her mind, she hit Send even while a sense of urgency tugged at her. “I’m sorry,” she told RJ. “I need to cut this short. I’ve got some things I need to take care of, and postponing it isn’t working well for my mental health.”

His raised brow said he was curious, but he just nodded. “Text me when you want to go again?”

“Yeah. Thanks.”

Raina showered and changed in record time, then raced out of the gym. If her friend wasn’t going to call her back, she had to find the boy’s family and warn them. But ... how?

Sitting in the car, she tapped a second message to Vince.

Can you talk?

Three seconds later her phone rang. “Hi.”

“Hey, what’s up?” His deep voice rumbled in her ear, and she blinked at the emotion that raced through her.

She cleared her throat and focused. “Are you busy?”

“Never too busy for you.”

She thought she heard a door shut. “If I’m interrupting—”

“You’re not. I’m just babysitting, but Charlie can cover for a few minutes. What’s going on?”

“I ... was wondering if you’d...” She stopped, her heart chugging.

“I don’t know why you find it so hard to ask for what you need, but you can trust me, Raina. Just ask.”

She huffed a breath and let his words wash over her.

Just ask. He had no idea how hard that was, but protecting the boy trumped her fears. What if she didn’t ask and something happened to him? “Fine. I want you to find Michael Harrison’s family and warn them that he might be in danger.”

“What? How do you know that?”

She sighed. “You know how I said the boy reminded me of someone from my past?”

“Yeah.”

“That guy was ... abusive. A narcissist. He went by the name Kevin Anderson, and if he sees that footage and thinks Michael is his—which they did say he was adopted, so ... But anyway, Kevin won’t stop until he has him—and that would end very badly for all involved.”
