“Thought that’s what lawyers were for,” Fleming said.

Simon shrugged as though none of this was important to him. “PIs are cheaper by the hour.”

“I see. Have you ever heard of a woman by the name of Raina Price?”

He met the agent’s eyes. “No. I haven’t.”

“Your PI was in the hospital the same day she was drugged and almost killed.”

“I’m sorry, I really don’t see what this has to do with me. I didn’t send him to the hospital.”

“But you knew he was in North Carolina.”

“To look at a property there. Property out east is cheaper and the dollar goes a lot farther.”

All of that was actually true, and if they searched his laptop, they’d find evidence to back up his story.

“You have another son, Keith Baldridge.”

“I do.”

“Is he here?”

“He’s not. He doesn’t live here. He has his own place. But I think he’s traveling for work. Why?”

“We’d just like to speak with him,” Agent Gresham said.

“Well, you can try his cell phone, but there’s nothing I can help you with other than to give you his number.”

The agents nodded. “Thank you for your help.”

CHAPTER

TWENTY-TWO

Raina groaned and lifted a hand to her head, wondering what band had taken up residence there. Or what truck had she walked in front of?

She blinked and her surroundings came into focus. A wood ceiling, wood walls, wood floor. A cabin? A very nice cabin with a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, a grand piano in the corner, and a kitchen to her right. She was on a sofa, the cushions beneath her comfortable, inviting her to drift back to sleep. But—

Michael!

Kevin!

She sat up with a gasp, then lay back down fast before she lost the contents of her stomach. Two deep breaths and a few minutes later, she sat back up and her eyes landed on the man in the recliner opposite her.

Kevin Anderson. He looked slightly older with a little gray at his temples and a few lines at the corner of his eyes. Eyes she wished she could forget about, but he was watching her, a gun resting in his lap. “Welcome back.”

“How’d you find me?” She flexed her fingers. He hadn’t usedany restraints. Of course he hadn’t. He wouldn’t think he’d need them.

“I didn’t. I found Michael. Imagine my surprise when you yelled at him to run, and I turned to see the woman I’ve been searching for the past almost fourteen years.” His right eyebrow lifted. “But that’s not important at the moment. Just tell me, heismy son, isn’t he?”

“Would you believe me if I said no?”

“No.”

“Then why ask?” Something dark and furious flickered in his gaze, and Raina decided if she wanted to live, she was going to tell him. “He’s yours.”

“And you didn’t think that was something I needed to know?”
