“Be a good girl and take the medicine. It's in liquid form so it's easier for you to swallow,” he said.

It touched her that he’d thought about getting liquid form instead of pill form. She didn't mind taking pills, but they weren't her favorite. They brought up a lot of memories from when she was forced to take all sorts of pills growing up.

A shudder made its way through her body as she closed her eyes, trying not to think about her childhood. It wasn't a bad childhood, but it wasn't normal, and it cemented her dislike of doctors and medicine.

“Here you go,” Miles said as he handed her the cap filled with medicine.

She quickly downed the medicine, swallowing it before she stuffed the last little bit of fruit into her mouth. The medicine tasted like bad cough syrup. Storm finished off her water, trying to get the taste out of her mouth as it still lingered.

“Now that you're feeling better, I would like to ask a couple more questions. If that's okay,” he said.

“I guess,” she replied. “If I don’t like them, I’m not going to answer.”

She wanted him to know up front that if he asked her anything too personal or that she didn't want to answer, she wasn't going to. He may have gotten answers out of her when she was sick and not thinking clearly yesterday, but she was feeling better now and wasn't going to let him take advantage.

“That's fine,” he said. “How long have you been getting sick so easily?”

“Since I was a little girl. My parents first thought it might just have been because I was in kindergarten and there were so many germs but then I moved into first and then second grade and was still getting sick,” she explained.

She had thought about going into more detail about visiting so many doctors but that wasn't the question he asked.

“Did you go to doctors for it? Did you find out what was wrong?” he asked.

“I went to more than I could count. They just told me I have a weak immune system and that was it,” she responded.

Storm had thought about going to a high-end doctor after she saved up money to try and figure out what was wrong but didn't know how long that was going to take. Money was always a factor and right now, with sending money to her parents to repay them, she didn't have enough.

“Good doctors?” he asked.

She shrugged her shoulders. For the most part they were good doctors. Some of them were specialists in her county or in a city close to them. They all came back with the same conclusion; it was just a weak immune system.

Since she had thought about going to a high-end doctor, she also thought he might say the same exact thing. She didn't want to be let down again. It was already a struggle to live her life, and she didn't need another disappointment.

“I think you would get along with my sister. She recently has been to several doctors on top of her Daddy being a doctor. She's not too happy right now,” he said.

He had a sister? She couldn't believe that.

Miles' phone pinged and she watched as he read the message before looking back up at her. Dread filled her stomach when he continued to look at her. It was almost like his eyes were sad, but she couldn't read anything else.

“How are you feeling?” he asked. “And I want the truth. No lying or I'm going to take you over my lap and spank you.”

“I feel better than I did yesterday. I think I'm getting better,” she responded.

“Good. I made extra soup that's in the fridge and you have some fruit and canned things in your kitchen. Remember to stay hydrated and eat. And get some more rest.”

“You're leaving?” she asked as he stood up.

Her shoulders slumped forward as she sighed. She didn't want him to leave. She wanted him to stay and take care of her more while she got to know him.

“I have to leave. There is some work I need to get done,” he said.

He stood there, looking at her for some time before he opened his mouth again. It was almost like he was contemplating what he was about to say. What could he want to say?

“I wanted to let you know we can't see each other anymore,” he said. “It's better this way. I don't want to see you again. Ever.”

Tears filled Storm's eyes as Miles walked away. She heard the front door open and close and that's when she broke.

Storm grabbed the pillow on the couch and held it tightly as sobs wracked her body. She shouldn't be affected by this, but she had felt the connection and thought when he started asking questions it was because he wanted to get to know her better.
