She had a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach like something was going to happen, but she didn't know what. Now she thought it may have to do with the threatening messages she had gotten because she had received some more late last night and this morning.

Storm was exhausted. So much had happened in such a short amount of time and she didn't know what to do. She didn't know where to go or who to talk to.

She had seriously considered the police again but when she remembered what the person looked like that was staring at her, she immediately knew she couldn't. The guy looked creepy and very threatening. Just the way he held his body reminded her of some of the people at Miles' birthday party.

Storm also didn't want to go to the police and find out the police were in the guy's pocket. That would be her worst nightmare because then they would know she went to report them. Things could get a lot worse.

She had heard one of her co-workers talk about the police being paid off every now and then to look the other way when something happened. That scared her. She didn't want to be another victim the police didn't investigate because they were paid off.

Tears streamed down her face as she walked up the stairs to her apartment. She had just finished a shift at the bookstore, feeling eyes on her the whole time, and she was beyond exhausted.

When she had thought about not wanting to live anymore several days ago, she didn't know what she was talking about. Right now, she just wanted things to stop. She was so tired and frightened, maybe it would be better if she was dead.

So many things would happen if she wasn't alive anymore. Yes, her parents would be sad but they wouldn't have to worry if she was getting sick all the time.

They were really the only people she thought would care enough. She knew Hedda would care but she also knew she would move on. Storm was such a small part of Hedda's life she didn't think it would matter.

Unlocking her apartment, she carefully went in. She looked around to see if anything was out of place, but she couldn’t tell. She was getting paranoid over everything.

Tonight, she was supposed to meet up with Hedda for dinner. Storm planned to tell her about the threatening messages and feeling the eyes on her. She had no clue if Hedda was going to believe her, but she needed to try. She had to tell somebody and Hedda was the only person she knew in the city who was talking to her.

The first thing she needed to do was get a grip on herself. She needed to calm herself down before she went out again.

There was no doubt she was going to feel those eyes on her again and she needed to be mentally prepared. She didn't want to give Hedda a reason to be nervous or scared when they got to dinner.

She needed Hedda to be calm so she could get through it. Storm knew if Hedda wasn't calm, it wasn't going to end well.

She was so drained, she just wanted to talk to Hedda so somebody else knew what was going on. Storm leaned up against her door and let out a sob. She just needed to make it through tonight and tell Hedda so things would hopefully be better.

She had to believe that.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

MILES

Ever since Miles left Storm in her apartment, he had been miserable. So many times, he found himself wondering if she was doing okay or not. He had thought about texting or calling her but stopped himself every time.

He didn't want to put her in danger, and her being in his life was dangerous. But he felt bad for telling her he never wanted to see her again, ever. He should have been nicer to her when he’d said that, but he wasn't.

Miles had gotten an earful when Hedda called him the other day. She said she couldn't believe he had been rude to Storm, that she was the nicest person ever, and he should apologize. And he should.

His mom had taught him to be a better man when he was growing up. To treat women with respect and kindness. Eighteen years without his mom and being in the Ricci Crime Family had apparently allowed things to slip through the cracks.

Miles really should apologize because his mom would roll over in her grave if she found out how he’d treated Storm. It was unacceptable and had taken him several days to realize that. His mom would have smacked him over the head… if she were still alive.

Everything in him was telling him he should be with her, and he was starting to see that. His mind was constantly on her, no matter what he did to try and forget her. He wanted to make sure she was okay, but he stopped himself several times a day because he didn’t want to put her in danger.

He wanted her to constantly be safe, which was something he couldn’t guarantee if she was with him.

But he also needed to remember she was a grown adult and could make decisions for herself. If she wanted to be with him, even if she knew the risks, then he wouldn’t deny her that.

With that thought in mind, he picked up his phone to call her when Hedda’s name popped up on the screen.

“Hello?” he said as he picked it up.

“Have you talked to Storm yet?” she asked. “Wait, no you haven’t because you told her you didn’t want to fucking see her ever again. My fucking bad.”

Miles flinched and hung his head.
