People merely go about it different ways.

His is to actively seek, ruling out the wrong woman by giving as many as possible a chance.

Whereas I prefer to let fate take its course, so sure destiny will bring her to me and vice versa.

And here I am, the woman of my dreams mere feet away.

Not that I can do anything about it.

Scratch that, I can. I just shouldn’t.

Yet.

“I can’t screw this up.”

“The case or with her?”

“She’s a part of both,” I remind him.

“I assume if I were to suggest that you ask to be excused, you’d be pissed?”

“Damn straight.”

“Which is exactly why I’d never suggest it. That’d be crazy. Not at all something a best friend would do. And that’s what I am. The bestest friend to you. A man that will stand by while you risk you career. I told you so will never pass these lips.” He bows dramatically, attempting to be the picture of gallantry. That’s what I love about him, his ability to make me smile despite currently feeling like the very definition of what’s between a rock and a hard place.

Willis pats me on the back. “Did you just there-there me?”

“Only if it helped.”

Surprisingly, it did. Not that I’d ever tell him that. He’s already a lot. “Meh,” I respond, lifting my hand and shifting it side to side.

“I am under appreciated and that’s hurtful.”

“Your skin is too thick for any barbs to pierce it.”

“I moisturize,” he brags.

“Thayer?” Lillian calls, her muted voice reassuring me that she’s not listening in on…whatever this is.

“Yes, dear?” Willis quietly answers, changing his normal manner of speaking to resemble mine. Honestly, it’s not a bad impression either. Being my partner for so long, not to mention he truly is my best friend, he’s been around enough to commit it to memory.

No doubt he practices it, waiting for the right moment to show it off.

Which I guess is now to give me shit I knew he would.

“Coming,” I holler out, elbowing Willis in the gut. His oomph assures me it landed and I feel a bit better knowing that.

Until he chimes in with, “Not until after this case is solved.”

I’d call him a dick, but he’d just have a sarcastic response for that, too.
