EPILOGUE

JAMESON

The week after Thanksgiving, my parents left for their first winter in Florida, and the remaining siblings breathed a collective sigh of relief. The twins and Mav were suddenly the sole occupants of the big house, all of them more than a little weirded out at the prospect. Noel’s parents and brother, Alex—who I’d actually really hit it off with—left forty-eight hours later, leaving our small town feeling impossibly smaller.

The bite of winter had chapped my face in the four days we’d been on the water. Axel, Mav, and I brought on Caius, one of our endless roster of cousins, as our fourth crewman for the cod season, all of us thanking everything holy the snow held off long enough for us to train him in and make some damn money before the truly miserable conditions hit. My new vantage from the wheelhouse was…humbling, to say the least, knowing that three Rhodes generations had carved through these waters so I could do it so freely.

I pulled out my phone once I’d parked the truck in our drive, guilt weighing on my shoulders. We’d been so busy with all of our own bullshit, I’d barely talked to Alice since she left.

Jameson

Hey sis, how’s SoCal?

Alessandra

Great! Enjoying the mild weather. You surviving cod?

Jameson

Not too bad so far.

Alessandra

Good! That makes me happy.

Jameson

How’s the new gig?

Alessandra

Fine.

Jameson

Just fine?

Alessandra

Eh. Yeah. The job is great—I’m good at it.

Jameson

But…?

Alessandra

My boss is a dick.

I snorted, shaking my head as I tapped out a reply.

Jameson

Bummer. Can you go around him?

Alessandra

Nope.
