What I was mostgrateful for in all of this was the way they all refused to treat me any differently after Eric. There had been a few initial days of concern, helping me navigate the legal process of getting a restraining order and pressing charges. Then, Vallie stepped up to take on the case when his slimy family bailed him out. Josie leapt into action, compiling a spreadsheet of different online therapists and who took what kind of insurance, insisting I’d need somewhere safe to talk through all the shit he put me through. But when the bruises faded, so did the kid gloves, mercifully pretending everything was business as usual. No walking on eggshells like my family. No pity in their eyes like our regulars at The Cracked Corset. I fucking loved them all the more for it.
