During the day, he was CEO and I was a secretary. But after hours, we were two consenting adults. I got just as much satisfaction from our lovemaking as he did, maybe even more. At least I was willing to concede that something important had happened. He seemed to want to bounce right back into our work relationship instead of headstrong lovers. But he was in charge, so I had to follow his lead.

At my car, he pulled me into his arms again. As he kissed me passionately beneath the heavy cement ceiling in the dimly lit alcove of the parking garage, I felt my heart begin to quicken again. This was an added bonus, unexpected because it was out in the open. If he wasn’t careful, people would begin to talk.

I didn’t fight it, but I couldn’t deny the monster of desire springing back to life inside me. I wondered if this was just the beginning of another roll in the hay, but just when the fire started burning, he broke away.

His eyes were haunted as he gazed at me, and I knew he was reliving our adventure upstairs. “See you tomorrow,” he rasped. He reached for his tie, forgetting for a moment that he hadn’t put it back on.

I smiled politely, not trusting myself to anything more. I ducked into my front seat, my head spinning. Nate was definitely trouble, although the good, heart lifting, toe curling kind. I wondered what tomorrow would bring, and how often we could get together without anyone else finding out.

All the reasons not to sleep with my boss fled my mind, leaving a single, solitary hope. I wanted him again. Once just wasn’t enough. I was willing to risk everything, my job, my future, and my reputation, just to have him inside me a second time. He gave me a taste of paradise, but I was greedy. I didn’t need a crystal ball to know that he felt the same way.

Chapter 19

Nate

I watched her drive away, thinking about what I had just done. It wasn’t anywhere near the desk, but that didn’t help matters. I fell into the same pattern as my father, unable to resist temptation when it was so close to my workspace.

Ava deserved better. She deserved a man who was interested in a happily ever after. I didn’t like emotions and I didn’t want anything permanent. I was just looking for a good time, and I didn’t properly explain that before it began.

When she reached into my pants, I was shocked. But she knew what she was doing. No man on earth could have resisted that. I followed my heart, or rather, my dick, and ended up screwing her on the sofa.

Afterwards, I didn’t want it to end, so I kissed her. But then I was afraid she would get the wrong idea. I couldn’t back out without seeming like an asshole and I couldn’t move forward without making myself uncomfortable.

I wasn’t sure what to do, so I walked back up to the fifth floor and knocked on Peter’s door. He was still there. Like me, he tended to work early and work late. It was the sign of a dedicated executive and I encouraged it. I couldn’t ask people to put in more time than they legally had to, but the culture that my father created and which I perpetuated, said that the farther up the food chain you got, the more time you were expected to put in.

I opened the door when he invited me in and pulled up a chair beside his desk. “You want to go out for drinks?” I asked.

“Sure,” he replied, always up for an adventure. “Is everything okay?”

“I’ll tell you all about it, but not here,” I said.

“Do you want to take one car?”

“Sure,” I replied. I could leave my car in the parking garage and have Peter swing back by on our way home.

“Just let me finish this email,” he requested.

“I’ll go grab my wallet,” I said, standing up.

We met in my reception area a few minutes later. I couldn’t help glancing at Ava’s desk and Peter caught it. “Trouble with the secretary?”

“Let’s just get out of the building,” I replied. For some reason, it felt like we would get caught if I said anything within these four walls.

Peter drove to our favorite bar. It was an upscale place with expensive drinks and a discerning clientele. The place itself was down to earth though, with warm wooden tables and a fun atmosphere. Boston was one of the oldest cities in the country. It predated the Declaration of Independence by a few hundred years. I didn’t know how old the bar was, but I knew that it passed its centennial.

“So, what’s going on? I’m dying to know,” Peter said as we slid into a booth.

“I fucked Ava,” I announced.

Far from the office, I felt more comfortable revealing my secret. It had only been a few minutes, maybe an hour, since the deed went down. I could still feel her body beneath mine. The sensual way she squirmed under my attention was distracting. I wanted more of it, but I didn’t want to break her heart.

“You dog!” Peter cried, louder than I wanted him to.

“The problem is, what if she thinks this is the start of a relationship?”

“Why are you shooting yourself in the foot before you even get started?” Peter complained. “Let yourself enjoy it.”

“What happens when it all falls apart? How am I going to work with her then?”
