The impulse to smirk, much less smile, leaves like a puff. "I'm not."
"What do you mean you aren't? Did something go wrong with one of the repairs?"
Looking away from him, I swallow back emotion at the loss of my dream. "I canceled the purchase."
"Why?" he growls.
"Why the heck do you think?" Now I meet his eyes, my own filled with the temper coursing through me. "I couldn't afford it once you decided to take a cut of Nuovi Inizi's profits."
"But you sold the club to us. You have enough to buy the house outright now."
"I had already texted my realtor to cancel the sale when I realized the only true option was to sell the club to your brother."
"It wasn't your only option."
I give him a look that says,right. "My only safe option."
"I will never let you be the fall guy for our business," he practically shouts. "That was never the plan. You can run Nuovi Inizi and I will always keep you safe."
Jumping up from the table, he starts pacing in the tiny confines of my kitchen.
"That's not the only reason."
He stops and glowers at me. "What else?"
"I didn't think I was pregnant and had no intention of staying in Portland after I trained Helios."
"Where were you going to go?"
"Does it matter? Away from here."
"Because of me."
No reason to sugarcoat it. "Yes."
"And now?"
"Now what?" I don't know what he's asking.
"Are you going to run?"
"What would be the point? You already said you'd come after me." And no way am I escaping the Hades Brotherhood's assassin.
He's a hunter. His men said as much.
I have no intention of becoming prey.
"You hate me."
Do I? "A week ago I would have agreed," I admit.
"But now?"
"Now, I've spent the last week only sleeping well when you sneak into my bed. You take care of me and it's not all about what's best for the baby. You rub my feet and tell your cousin to figure stuff out himself when it is my job to teach him."
"But none of that changes that I used you to get information."
"No." I sigh. "None of that changes why we met."
