"Are you prepared for her rejection if she can't accept what it means for you to be Dimios?"

"No." She's mine. Now and always. "But she deserves to know what she is allowing into her life."

"You are not a thing, but a man."

"Sometimes, I don't feel human."

"We all lost part of our humanity when Grandfather refused to negotiate your return."

"Not when we made our first kills?"

"No. For you, the first time they tortured you, they took away a little bit of what makes you human. For me and Orion, the day Constantin snuck us into his father's office to show us the videos of you being beaten peeled away part of ours."

"Lucia deserves a man with his humanity intact." But I am the man she gets.

"Your sun deserves the man she wants. If that is you, you will only hurt her if you try to protect her from yourself."

"When did you get so wise about women?"

Zeus shakes his head. "Go. Talk to her, but take a shower and change your clothes. You look like an extra from a horror movie."

Maybe that's exactly what Lucia needs to see. Me as I am, not how I wish I could be for her.

Chapter 47

LUCIA

At the sound of the saferoom's door opening, I leap from the bed and rush into the outer room. The low-level light reveals Theo standing near the small sofa.

He nods toward the front door. "Boss. She's sleeping in the bedroom."

"I'm right here." And I haven't been sleeping.

Gina left the panic room hours ago when Zeus came and told her she could, but I promised Atlas I wouldn’t until he came for me. So, I stayed.

"Uh, boss, do you want to go take a shower? I'll bring Lucia up to your suite."

Something dark is speckled over Atlas's face and arms. The scent of old copper permeates the air.

"Are you hurt?" I rush over to him and start patting his body, looking for wounds.

"The only men hurt are the ones who wanted to kill me and my brothers and kidnap you." The way he sayskidnap you, that's the part he holds against them the most.

Because I matter to him.

Atlas cups my shoulders. "You don't look like you were sleeping."

"I wasn't."

"Why not?"

"I didn't know where you were."

"Didn’t Theo tell you my mission was a success?"

I nod. "But no one would tell me where you were. I didn't know if you were hurt. Theo said you weren't but…" I shrug.

"You didn't know if you could believe him."
