Exactly what I wanted.

"I didn't know this was here. I've visited the Rose Garden in Washington Park, but no one ever mentions this place. I bet it's beautiful in full bloom."

"We'll come back in July and you can see."

"That's nine months away. You keep talking like we have a future."

"Because we do."

"Isn't it too early to be sure about that?"

"How long did you know your husband before you knew?"

She makes a strange sound before she shakes her head. "We knew each other our whole lives. Our parents were matchmaking before I learned how to walk."

"Is that why you married him?" Had she loved the man who put her and their baby in such a dangerous situation?

"Family expectation was a big part of it, but I fell in love with Tino. He was handsome and sophisticated."

"He was older than you?"

"Only a couple of years, but he had way more life experience than I did at twenty."

"Were you happy?" Can she be happy with me?

She'll have to learn to be.

"For a while."

"Until the baby?"

"Things were hard before that. We argued over getting Lenny professional help. Tino and his dad were adamantly against it."

"Why?" Was it money? But somehow Lucia had ended up with enough money to start a nightclub.

"They were old fashioned Italians. Everything was supposed to be taken care of by the family."

Sounds like the mafia. Only family takes a backseat to the wellbeing of the syndicate. Not for my uncle though. For him, family comes first.

What happened to me shaped all of us, Constantin, Zeus, Orion, and even Zephyr and Helios. They weren't part of the rescue, but they learned how little our grandfather valued us and how easily he controlled our parents.

"You deserved better."

"So did Lenny. He was devastated by the loss of the baby. It set him back for a long time." She sounds sad.

"You have a lot of empathy, don't you?"

"Not so much anymore, but back then, I cared too much about the people in my life."

She's saying she cared about that piece of shit she was married to. "Are you saying you don't care now?"

"I don't have people in my life now."

Bullshit. "You have me."

And when she is pregnant with my kid, I'll be her shadow. A man who knows so many ways to kill also knows how to keep someone safe.

She takes care of her employees too, not just her club. They care about her. Does she not see that?
