I start crashing my hands into his chest, hoping the hard hits could reset his heart. Uncontrollable screams leave my raw throat, while I’m bruising my clenched palms, hitting his body. I don’t care if I break a rib, I’m trying to save his life.

“Come on, you mother fucker!YOU CAN’T LEAVE ME!!!” I yell at him. “You can’t…I love you. Don’t die on me. Don’t die.”

Desperation coates my voice as I beg. I haven’t asked for much in this life, and I will never ask for anything ever again, I just need him to take a deep breath in.

“What?” I hear someone behind me, after the door loudly crashes into the office wall.

I turn to see Marko standing frozen at the threshold, his face screwed up with fear, drained of color.

“Please call an ambulance!” I beg him. “I think he is having an overdose.”

He rushes in, taking out his phone and dialing the number, his eyes scanning his son’s face.

“Hello, my name is Marko, and I need an ambulance at Parker’s street, thirteen. I think my son is having an overdose.” He cups Noah’s cheek. “No, he is not a drug addict. No, I don’t know what he took. Please, hurry!”

Marko’s voice cracks at the last word, as he pushes my hands away and takes over massaging his son’s heart.

“They’ll be here in a few minutes,” he says. “How did you know what to do?”

“I’ve been through this once before, with Corey, my best friend.”

“Wipe your tears, kid. It’s gonna be okay.” I hear his words, and I want to believe them, but the tone of his voice is not promising at all.

I watch him as he takes over and keeps pumping Noah’s chest relentlessly, and I can feel how terrified he actually is of losing his son. Every parent would be… Besides my mother.

“Ajde, možeš ti to, mali. Drži se!” Marko chokes out, as his chin trembles.

A couple of nurses lift Noah’s limp body onto a stretcher and roll him into the van. I watch from the street as the doctor presses an oxygen mask onto his face and places a stethoscope against his heart, listening carefully.

“It’s faint, but it’s there. You did a good job,” she says to me before looking at Marko. “You are his father right? Please, get inside, we need to get going.”

He jumps into the ambulance and I watch the large metal door close behind him. The van drives off with the shine of red light and the blaring sound of sirens left behind.

A police officer approaches me from the side, wrapping my body in a blanket. Frightened by the sudden closeness, I turn to him.

“Sorry to startle you, miss, but I need to ask you some questions.” He shrugs slightly, offering me a sad smile.

“Yeah, okay.” I enter Noah’s office again, and take a seat on the carpet in the corner of the room.

The officer crouches next to me, but doesn’t ask me to move or sit back up, which I’m thankful for.

“I understand this is a big shock to you, and I am truly sorry to bother you.” He clears his throat. “I take it you found mister Lukovich? Do you mind telling me where you were before finding him?”

“No, sir. Not at all,” I say. “I just got home from visiting my father. I landed about two hours ago. I went straight home, and read a letter I got from Noah.” My eyes scan my cold hands, still trembling with the force I used to hit Noah’s chest. “From there I ran to his apartment, where his neighbor told me to come here. The front door was locked, so I circled the building, since I frequently used the back entrance to meet him. It was left ajar, so I walked in, and…”

“Here, take this.” He offers me a napkin.

“Thank you. And I found him lying on the ground. He wasn’t moving at first, but then he got the shakes, and I did CPR. I don’t even know how long I was doing it before his dad showed up.”

“Did you see anyone leave the premises when you arrived?”

“No, but I had a bad feeling about it, since the door was left open. Noah wouldn't do that. And he wouldn’t take any drugs.”

“Thank you, miss. I will make sure you are updated on the situation,” the policeman says, before turning and waking away to help his coworkers analyze the, now, crime scene.

I stay seated in the corner for quite some time, before one of the officers asks me nicely to leave. I step out onto the wet street, and start walking down the road to the hospital.
