TARYN

Leah was hiding something.

Of course she was.

Apart from Kyren, Zandyr, and Ryker, everyone Taryn had let into his life–or who’d crashed into it–had a secret.

His mother had been almost ashamed to give birth to him.

His father had accepted him only when Taryn had shown enough skills to impress him, then he’d refused to let him go.

Three of his brothers had tried to murder him in his sleep.

His youngest brother had helped him escape that same night. Taryn still wondered if his brother had done it to get rid of him and have a better chance at seizing the throne.

Every other so-called friend and lover had gravitated into his life with an ulterior motive.

Power, influence, riches.

But all those betrayals had taught him to be suspicious. To read reactions and gazes. Protect himself and othersbeforemayhem struck.

Better to deal with a problem before it appeared.

So what kind of problem was he dealing with right now?

He could have uncovered whatever secret was pulsing in Leah’s energy with one careful, exact touch.

He refused.

It was a line he’d vowed never to cross, the same night he’d escaped. He’d kept his promise. Nobody needed to read minds if they read reactions. No longer looking into his eyes, tucking one strand of hair behind her ear every other minnan, energy going haywire.

Whatever secret Leah hid, it was important.

He had to get her out of the command building. Whatever motive she was hiding, there was too much information stored here. The space port, all those commanders’ studies filled with secret holo-vids, Quillon’s best and most powerful gathered in the atrium.

Did she knowhissecret?

No, impossible. Only his companions and the Quillon elders did.

Until he knew what was happening, he had to be careful.

He didn’t want to be careful. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and lose himself in her essence.

Maybe the secret wasn’t as horrid as his years of training were warning him it was. His energy was hectic, too, after all. He’d been on edge since he’d felt her.

Only one way to find out.

Yes, finally.

No, not that.

He wouldn’t do that.

“Did you let your loved ones know you’ve arrived safely?” he asked, breaking the stillness as they walked toward the garden exit.

He knew she’d been talking to an older woman, probably a relative, but what if she loved someone outside of her family?

What if she had a lover back home? What if that was her secret?
