On the bright side, the beds might not meld together ifhedidn’t want them to.

But this wasn’t a bright side. Universe help her, Leah was actually saddened by the idea that Taryn didn’t want her as much as she wanted him.

She shouldn’t, but she did. And she had to live with that.

“Okay, think aboutanythingelse,” she told her reflection. “Literally anything else.”

She nodded at herself, determined to follow through with the plan.

After all, she was tired. The beds looked comfy, she had to endure maybe five minutes of controlling her thoughts before she drifted off to sleep.

Mind made up, she left the bathroom. Her skin felt smooth after that amazing bath, but the most inane ideas whirled in her mind.

The door slid open.

Okay, think of something. Fast. How about…That time she lost her way on the playground during her first day at kindergarten and the robot supervisor didn’t notice it in time, so she got lost in the garden, and ended up talking with all the flowers.

Taryn standing next to his bed, tunic off, dressed only in a pair of loose pants. A faint scar marred his glorious abs.

Oooookay, think, think. Oh, that time her alarm malfunctioned and she ended up late for a test and had to beg the teacher, in front of her entire school, to take it. She’d cried, it had been a mess.

Taryn’s glorious ab muscles flexed as his gaze caressed her bare arms from afar.

Damn it, Leah, stop looking at him and concentrate on–on…the day you found out the flower shop was closing. Remember how absolutely gutted you were? Yeah, stay in that energy.

“Which one do you prefer?” Taryn asked, his voice as silky as the dark sheets.

“This one,” Leah squeaked and nodded at the closest bed, sliding in as fast as her limbs could carry her.

Damn, these sheets really were soft. And the mattress must have been crafted out of clouds, too, because they caressed each sore muscle in her back. The beds on the ship hadn’t been the most comfortable, and she barely fit in her futon back home.

She wrapped herself in the sheet and turned her back to Taryn’s side. “Good night.”

She swore she could hear him give the softest sigh. So very human of this wonderful, wondrous Quillon.

No, no, NO. Not wondrous. Just a guy. A sexy, amazing–No! Get it together. Okay, okay, the first time the doctor told her there weren’t enough funds in Nana’s account to keep her there for more than two weeks, even after Leah had sold everything of value she owned–except the house.

The soft shuffle of Taryn getting into his own bed rang out in the silent room. “Sleep well.”

“You, too,” she said and instantly regretted it.

Talking meant she was still awake.

She needed to fall asleep fast, before her thoughts went to how close Taryn was. She swore she could almost feel his warmth and she definitely wanted to feel it against her back–

When you decided to sell the house–

Taryn shifted in his bed, the sound tempting.

–that beautiful, beautiful house, where you grew up and where all your lovely memories still are–

Taryn sighed again. The sound beat against Leah’s chest. She curled up on her side, lifting the sheet above her head, as if that would help.

–and now that house belongs to someone else, because you needed the money to save Nana. You need to save Nana. Screw this guy–no, not like that. Get it together, Leah. Please.

But she couldn’t. Try as she might, Leah couldn’t focus on anything other than Taryn and how they were alone in this room, so insanely close, ithurtthat he wasn’t touching her.

Leah grit her teeth.
