But she deserved it–and so did he.

Taryn knew how valuable the truth was.

“How did you find out?” he asked.

On Quillon, nobody aside from his closest companions knew about his true nature. Outside of Quillon, only his so-called family knew who he was. They hadn’t known what he’d truly become, but they could have recognized him.

He hadn’t used his given Zavorian name since he’d escaped, but someone could have made a dangerous connection.

Taryn looked enough like a Quillon that he didn’t draw attention, most danns.

Leah had never seen a Zavorian, she couldn’t have picked up on the subtle differences even Quillons missed.

She couldn’t have been able to tell them apart. Someone had told her.

“Not from you,” Leah muttered, staring at the window. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Why won’t you tell me who told you?”

She clamped her lips together, as if struggling to keep the words inside.

So she did want to reveal her secrets. Perhaps not consciously, but something inside her was urging her to do so.

She wanted to tell him—what was it?

“How about another deal?” he asked.

“I’m kind of sick of them.” She let out a mirthless laugh, that sounded so sad, it hurt Taryn’s Light. “I always seem to lose, even when I convince myself I might win something.”

“In this case, we can both win or we can both lose. The choice is up to us,” he said. “We both have secrets.”

Leah inhaled sharply, turning toward him. “You have more?”

“Don’t you?”

She worried her bottom lip between her teeth, while she kept staring at him. Finally, she gave a curt nod.

“We’re Lightmates,” he began. “The universe made us perfect for each other. No matter what we’re hiding, we can find a solution.”

“What if we can’t?” she asked, voice shaking. “What if it ruins us?”

Ruins? What was she hiding?

The primal, Lightmate side of Taryn instantly worried that she was thinking about someone else back on Terra, aside from her grandmother. He’d never been jealous, and he definitely didn’t like feeling it now.

The logical, trained side of him, however…that one saw danger. Not in Leah herself, but something relating to this situation.

“It won’t. Secrets lose their power when they are uncovered.” Taryn clenched his jaw. He wondered if he would ever be fully free from his own secret. “I will tell you mine, all of them, if you tell me all of yours. Deal?”

Leah closed her eyes. “I’m scared.”

“Why?Nothingwill ever change what I think about you.”

“This might.” She gulped. “And it’s not just that. Something—something terrible might happen.”

Taryn didn’t need to look at her to taste the absolute fear Leah had been hiding. It finally wafted off her energy, filling the entire ship, and spearing through Taryn.

The vessel continued the journey, as he turned fully to Leah, solemn and filled with conviction. “Nothingterrible will happen to you now that you are in my life. Whatever you are afraid of, I will make it go away and keep you safe,” he said.
