Not now, after she’d lost everything else apart from her reputation.

“If you figure it out, then it will be efficient,” Walter said smugly. “I can’t guarantee anyone here will have the time to hold your hand during our projects and Deruzia wants to start selling their gadgets on the market next year. Are you up for the job or not?”

NAZYN

Nazyn felt the shift in the lab instantly.

A clang, a muttered apology, and Walter stomping around. He did it so often, Nazyn could make out his steps from all the other employees in the building. And he really wished he couldn’t.

His mind should have been filled with more useful information, not the cadence of humans parading around. He was, after all, Deruzia’s genius.

At least that’s what they called him.

But if his genius had ever been his ally, it was betraying him right now. His mind wanted to do literally anything else than concentrate on the problem that could derail Deruzia’s plans on Earth.

The project he had to present at the Science and Innovation Forum this weekend, the most prestigious invention event on Earth.

The chance for Alien Inc. to expand their business on Earth.

After Nazyn had opened the portal between Earth’s North American Continent and Deruzia’s Capital, almost three years ago, Alien Inc. had mostly dealt with shipping resources to and from Deruzia. Now, Alien Inc. wanted to expand their market to sell Deruzian technology on Earth and vice versa.

The humans’ wireless technology was truly outstanding–so why was Nazyn having such a hard time making it cooperate?

“It seems to be working,” Rynar Te’Oken, Alien Inc.’s legal department director and one of the best lawyers in all the Nine Galaxies, said through the hologram projected in Nazyn’s office. “I can see you frowning from here.”

Just like Nazyn saw Rynar’s form as if the esteemed Deruzian was standing right there, so could he see Nazyn in his own office. Humans hadn’t mastered holograms, though they truly wanted to. A technology like this could help with intergalactic communication. Humans weren’t exactly used to aliens and seeing them would definitely ease some of the apprehension they still had.

IfNazyn could make the technology work on Earth. Properly.

“It works fine inside, but I’m having issues with it outside.” And Nazyn didn’t know why. Though he would rather rip off both his horns than admit that out loud.

“Nazyn, how long have we known each other?” Rynar asked.

“Known or liked?”

Rynar was now one of Nazyn’s most trusted companions, along with Zaryn, the accounting department director, and Deryg, head of security for Alien Inc.. The four of them had come to Earth, selected by Deruzia as their best representatives. But they’d hated each other in their first year at the Academy.

Rynar grinned, showing a bit of fang. “You were a pain when we first met. Tinkering with your devices, charming all the females.”

Nazyn huffed a laugh. “Says the Deruzian who would have lost his left horn during the exam if my robot hadn’t shielded him from that blast during the battle exam.”

“And I was grateful for it–though you were, as the humans say, showing off.”

Nazyn shrugged. It was the truth. Once he’d gotten to the Academy, he’d done everything in his power to distance himself from the shame of his dynasty’s name. The traitors. The heretics. The would-be usurpers. Ten generations had passed since his dynasty had tried to lay claim to the Deruzian throne, and some had still cursed the A'Cryth sigil.

Not anymore.

Not since Nazyn had opened the portal. He’d scratched and bled for his discovery, at times so tired, he forgot to eat for days on end. By the time the portal had miraculously opened, he’d been in a haze of calculations and experiments that had almost killed him.

But he’d done it. Accomplished what no other Deruzian had been able to and most hadn’t believed was possible.

Before Nazyn, portals were legends.

He’d made them a reality.

Now they could travel between worlds.
