Was she frightened because he had wings? But she’d seen them before they had kissed. Perhaps Yakirian was right. Humans would tremble if they found out Deruzians’ true powers.

Until Nazyn found out why Darcy had hesitated, he couldn’t do anything about it.

He understood space and having time to process everything, but they couldn’t avoid each other forever.

They needed to talk.

Luckily for him, it seemed she already agreed.

On his side of the bed, in the space where his lumpy pillow should have been, was a note.

Wentto the pool before breakfast. We need to talk.

Darcy

And talk they would. If Darcy truly never wanted to see him again after tomorrow, he would understand. It would pain and gnash at him, but he’d been shunned most of his life because of his name.

Now it might happen because ofhim.

Either way, Nazyn was going to fix whatever had been broken between them last night.

DARCY

Seventy-two.

Seventy-three.

Seventy-four.

Seven–

Darcy propelled herself upwards, breaking the water’s still surface. She gasped, sucking in the chlorinated air, as the pool water trickled down her face. But it did nothing to soothe the whirlwind inside her.

Swimming usually relaxed her and slowed down her thoughts whenever she got into these states where she felt like her little world was caving in.

She hadn’t always been like this. She was a logical, calm person.

But then The Asshole had happened. His voice still lurked inside her brain and whenever it hissed at her, she got into this fight or flight state that just tripped her up. She either froze, her entire body tensing to protect her against an invisible foe, or she ran.

Last night, she’d somehow done both.

What a mess she’d made of things. One second she was enjoying the absolute perfect kiss, and then she was running away, crying.

Nazyn must’ve thought she was deranged.

Whenever she’d closed her eyes to try and sleep, the stricken look on his face burned behind her eyelids.

But there was so much fear inside her.

That she might lose this job.

That he was going to take advantage of her, somehow.

That he was going to break her heart, too.

Her little world, which she’d been so happy to live in most of her life, staying out of everyone’s way and just focusing on her school and work, had been shattered once. And she’d had to rebuild it with nothing but her mind and ambition. The Asshole hadn’t even left her any shards to patch up her existence.
