Jess:Are we still on for milkshakes after school? No taksies backsies everyone has to be in.

Nora:Yesss! I need a milkshake today. Science was awful.

Liam:Order mine for me? I might be a little late. I have to swing by dad’s office first. You know my order x

Jess:Hurry though, I won’t be able to stop myself from drinking yours too.

Liam:You wouldn’t.

Jess:I so would.

Nora:Stop arguing now, kids.

Jess:Who you calling kids? We’re all the same age. Also hurry up! I’m dying from a milkshake deficiency.

Liam:Always with the drama.

Nora:I’m two mins away. Quit your bitching.

My foot taps the ground in quick succession as I wait for Nora to meet me in our spot outside school. The cool springtime breeze whips my hair around my face as the sunshine peeks through the few lingering clouds. It’s a rare dry day in London; we’ve had almost a whole week of rain and right now I’m grateful for the break in the weather. Damp shoes are not the one.

“I’m here, I’m here,” Nora hollers as she drafts around the corner with all her schoolbooks in tow, like she’s just robbed the library, her brown eyes widening as she spots me.

I lift an eyebrow. “Why do you have all that?” I ask, gesturing to the books she’s about to drop.

“I need to study before the exam next week and I don’t have these,” she says, trying to adjust the strap of her backpack by shrugging her shoulder.

“You’re such a geek, Nor. You definitely have that one.” I point to the books, making her scowl at me as they wobble slightly in her arms. “And that one too.”

“Hey! These are different editions so…” She pokes her tongue at me whilst scrunching her nose.

“Like I said… geek. You’re lucky I love you.”

“I think you’ll find you’re the lucky one because I’m buying shakes tonight.”

“In that case, need help with your books?” I say as I smile, flashing my teeth.

“Thought you’d never ask.” Three heavy books drop into my open palms as I exhale a quiet grumble upon impact. She’s lucky she’s my best friend because I wouldn’t do this for anyone, milkshakes or not.

I place the books into my backpack, and do my best to ignore the extra weight pulling on my shoulders as we walk the mile and a half to the milkshake shack near Chelsea Road. This place is our favourite because the owner always gives us extras and the shakes are to die for.

“Hey girls, I thought you weren’t going to make it tonight. This is late for you two.” The owner, who we call Shake - his real name is Sam, but we’ve taken him under our wing as our resident and favourite shake maker, so nicknames come with that territory – says to us.

“You can blame this one and all her books she’s forced me to carry.” I hike a thumb over my shoulder, gesturing to Nora, who swats my arm in response.

Shake’s shoulders bounce gently as he chuckles at us. “Liam not coming tonight?”

Just as my mouth opens to reply, Liam flies up next to us panting like he just ran the London marathon. His dark hair is dishevelled, and his eyes are watering from sheer exertion.

“I… am… oh, God… here.” He folds over, gasping.

Ignoring Liam’s dramatic entrance, I turn my back to him and smile sweetly at Shake.
