He heard the rumble of a motor. He turned and sighted through the night vision binoculars as they idled near shore. “Dammit. Kodiak. That will overtake us before we can even get back to the fast-moving water. We have to go now, Jack. It’s our only chance.”

“Let’s move, sailor,” she said as he guided the boat to the bank. Minutes passed, the shore feeling farther away until the bottom scraped the ground.

Easy went over the side, splashing to pull the boat onto land, then reached for her. He gripped her waist and lifted her out, then urged her with him. He moved west on the shoreline, and they climbed over thick plants and spiky bushes. He stopped, sighted on their hunters. The black Zodiac made the curve, showered in moonlight.

Ducking back from the shore, Easy motioned for her to move ahead, and they went deeper into the jungle. The air was motionless, the slightest sound magnified.

A light flashed across the shore. Easy stopped, grabbed Jack, and went to ground. He lay still, watching the water.

“Well prepared little Boy Scouts, aren’t they?” she muttered.

The noise of the water covered any sound they’d make as the motor hummed loudly. Easy waited to make sure that light didn’t reveal them. They appeared in his line of vision. Jack had been right: they were prepared with assault weapons. Four of them.

“They’re not going to give up. We’ll have to make a break for it. We can’t wait here like sitting ducks.”

“Quack,” Jack said.

Easy flashed her a tense grin. “Stay low.”

They ran in a crouched position, moving on instinct, keeping the water to their right. He couldn’t chop at the underbrush, forced to climb over boulders and use the hanging roots to swing across a creek.

Ramos grinnedwhen his man said he’d spotted them. When he caught her, he wasn’t going to waste any more time. He was going to fuck her the moment he had his hands on her, strip her naked and take her like his aching dick and balls demanded, his lust spiking at the thought of how she would feel beneath him, thrashing and crying. He would take what he wanted now no longer under the illusion that he could woo her into his bed.

It was the man she was with. Handsome, virile, with rippling muscles. He had been between her legs and had her willingly. He’d brought the sheets of the master bedroom to his nose. They smelled of her and sex.

He would show her that wouldn’t stop what he had planned for him. He would have her, then she would watch Tovar beat him to death. Then he would let his men have her until they screwed her to death.

Texand the team hung on as the Black Hawk swooped into yet another valley, the wind shears rocking and bumping them all over again. The pilot was a freaking daredevil, but he’d asked the Nightstalkers for their best. He hugged the ground closer than any nap-of-the-earth ride Tex had ever been on. He held onto the strap as the chopper rose short and fast like a bucking bronco.

Bondo let off a string of curses, gripping the strap as hard as Tex. He was closer to the door. With his night vision goggles, he watched the terrain.

The chopper jolted and the pilot compensated, the hot wind shear driving it upward. He worked at getting the vehicle back into position and heard the man’s voice inside his helmet.

“We’re having ourselves a bucking bronc ride, folks. Our two minutes aren’t up yet, so hang on to your ropes and chaps. We’re going for the buckle.”

Tex chuckled. There was a smart-mouthed pilot after his own heart.

“Yeehaw,” Brawler called out and even with the white-knuckled grips, guys chuckled.

This was the kind of shit they lived for.

Without any warning, bullets roared a line of fire to Easy’s right. She didn’t have a moment to respond, as Easy swallowed her into his arms and rolled with her behind a tree. He grunted in pain, and she cursed Ramos.

“Jack,” Easy hissed in the dark. “Are you all right?”

“Yes,” she said, cupping his jaw. “Not shot. Not shot.”

“Good,” he said, his voice as nonchalant as if he was asking her if she wanted fries with her burger. How could he be so calm? Just a few yards away, a tree was severed in half.

Easy shifted to sight on the water, his body still shielding hers. The boat was upriver, the machine gunner ready to fire again.

Easy studied where the gunfire had been aimed and he frowned. “He’s pushing us in a certain direction.” He looked at her. “I don’t think he’s trying to kill us.”
