“You are too little and too young to have so much fucking nerve.” He barked. “You run away with your boyfriend, stop taking my calls for weeks and now you crawl back for help. If Caputo wants you, he should take care of you.”

“What?” Why did everyone think I needed to be taken care of? If all these big men would just leave me the hell alone, I’d be just fine without their help.

“I would have. I would have paid for you and taken care of you without you having to look for work in the back of some restaurant. You were the daughter of a rich, powerful man, and I could have given you that life back, but you chose Garon fucking Caputo!” He screamed.

My instincts took over and I shot up to my feet, pointing my finger at him.

“No, I wasn’t the daughter of a ‘rich, powerful’ man, I was the daughter of aMafiaman, and there might be nothing left of my family name, but I won’t stay here so you can yell and call me a whore over and over again! I came to talk to you because I thought we were friends, Leonardo, not because I was looking for protection, get that through your head. I don’t need it. From you, from Garon, from anyone. And if you think…” a wave of nausea made my throat close up for a second, “if you think…” I knew what I wanted to say to him, but suddenly I lost all my strength and fell back into the chair.

“Pina?” Leonardo looked at me funny while I struggled to take in deep breaths.

Suddenly, Arno and Santo were by my side, each grabbing me by one arm, trying to lift me up.

“Pina, talk to me.” Arno said. “Does anything hurt?”

“Huh?” I was too dizzy to make sense of his words.

Leonardo came to my side of the table, shadowing me.

“Che cazzo21? Who the fuck are you two? Take your hands off of her.”

Santo didn’t lose any time to get into his face, breathing like the bull chasing the red flag. “Step back before I break your legs and take out all your teeth in one punch.”

“She’s my…”

“She isnothingto you. Now listen to me, I’ve hurt a lot of men for the Caputo family and you just made top of my to do list.”

“You think I’m afraid of you and your hoard of Sicilians?” Leonardo shot back. “I took care of Pina. I kept her untouched and out of trouble forme, not for your boss. So get out of my face, you dog.”

A fight was about to erupt, one that would have most definitely ended up in a shooting in broad daylight. No one needed that.

“Stop.” I hissed, but my voice was frail. The two men were too busy measuring dicks to listen to me, so I pulled my hands onto the chair to get up and step between them, but I only made it halfway before being completely taken by the dizziness. My eyes rolled into the back of my head and my head started spinning like a washing machine cycle.

Next thing I knew, everything went black.

Chapter 8

“Rome is your turf, you know everyone around here. I want to know everything about Leonardo Bugllioni.” I told Luca, gripping my glass so tight, it was about to crack under pressure.

“Why him? He’s just the lackey. If you’re looking for someone to get in business with, you should be talking to the man in charge, Tony Balbano.”

But Tony Balbano was not sipping coffee with the woman I wanted so bad my balls were about to explode in my pants. It was fucking Bugllioni she’d met. Of course she didn’t tell me, because I would have bolted down the door to that fucking crammed apartment she called home.

“It’s not about that.”

“Let me guess. The girl at the Flora House? The one you dragged out the first night I took you there.” He scoffed. “You almost cost me my membership, thank you very much.”

“Pina Bernoulli.”

“Wait.” He laughed. “Isn’t that the one who screwed with your father?”

Every muscle in my body tightened to the limit.

“That was her sister.”

“Huh. You finally found something in common with your old man.”

How fucking ironic. Luca’s remark was nothing but another knife in my back, another reason why I should stay the fuck away from Pina, but that girl had something I’ve been craving my whole life. It was like there was a missing piece of me hidden inside of her. I felt complete when I was inside her. She could put my demons to sleep with one touch, so all the other reasons I had to stay the hell away from her were forgotten. I didn’t even blink when Balbano asked me for double what Martino owed as long as I got her and she brought me some peace because I wasn’t sure how long I could carry on with the chaos in my head.
