“You’re fine now,Piccolina.”

“And what happened with, umm, the person I was with?”

I smiled and kissed the soft skin on the back of her hand.

“Bugllioni is not here and the only reason he is walking on his own two feet right now is that he didn’t touch you.”

She scowled at the bodyguards. “Traitors.”

“Didn’t you hear the doctor?” Arno pointed out. “We care about you.”

“Dr. Marinelli, can I go home now? I feel fine.”

The smiling doctor picked up a tablet and looked into it.

“I’d like to hold you for a few more hours. The nausea is normal, but your blood pressure bottomed down very fast. It’s nothing to worry about, it happens in some pregnancies, but I would like to take some more tests before you leave. Just some blood work, nothing major. It’s too early for anything else.”

It was like someone pressed the button and froze the room in time. My ears started ringing and my lungs were burning up. The first thing I remembered was back when Giovani found out his wife was pregnant for the first time. She had the brilliant idea of surprising him at dinner, in front of our entire family and while everyone cheered, Gio stood there like a statue. Later that night I’d asked him what was with the long face, and he said it was what fear does to a man. Fear that he was going to be a shit father just like ours was, fear that he had another life to protect, fear that something—someone—might get to his new baby. That night my brother felt a million fears. And a hint of happiness because the love of his life was carrying his child.

I felt the same fucking things. I was petrified, afraid to move. No one moved. Pina’s hand turned cold in mine and I could feel her shake, but I didn’t know what to say or do. I wasn’t Giovani and she wasn’t my wife, but still, the hint of happiness was there and it was stronger than the million fears. I was anguished, hoping maybe I’d heard wrong, but I was also proud. For the life of me, I couldn’t make sense of all the things I was feeling.

“What?” Pina finally asked.

“Huh?” Dr. Marinelli looked at our shocked faces. “Oh, you didn’t know? That’s understandable, my assumption is that you’re only four or five weeks along, but it still shows up. Your Beta HCG clearly says you are pregnant. Congratulations, Miss Bernoulli.”

I cleaned my throat so I could speak again.

“Everybody out.”

“Sir…” the doctor tried to say something.

“Santo, Arno, get her out. Now. Stay at the door. No one gets in.”

“Yes, Boss.” Santo answered right away and hurried everyone outside.

I looked at Pina and she had tears in her eyes. She wasn’t crying, not yet, but there were drops gathering around her beautiful chocolate-dipped eyes. She looked small in that big hospital bed and somehow changed. Maybe it was just in my head because of how hard the news hit me, but there was a more determined look on her face now and she looked mature way beyond her age.

“Pina.”

“You don’t have to do anything.”

“What?”

“You... y-you don’t. I’ll never tell anyone it’s yours, you won’t have to see me ever again.” She sniffed. “I’m sorry, I was stupid and careless. I didn’t think about this for a second, because you were there and you were you, and you wanted me. I lost my head around you.Ero cosi stupida22.”

“We werebothstupid.” I never forgot about the condom. I fucked women while high on pills and stupid drunk and never forgot protection, but just like Pina, I was blinded by desperation and desire. I forgot and now she was pregnant. Bernoulli’s daughter was carrying a Caputo child.

“Garon, I won’t hold you responsible to this. You have no obligation…”

“To my child?” I raised my voice, revolted with what she was saying. There wasn’t much honor left in me, but I had more decency than to fuck a kid into someone and walk away like it never happened. “You’re carrying my blood.”

She pulled her hand away and covered her abdomen.

“How did this happen?” She whispered. I decided not to leave her rhetorical question unanswered.

“I fucked you for three hours straight. That’s how it happened.”

I loved that I made her blush.
