I glanced at the two women. “Me and the crew.”

“And where are you headed?”

Outside, the sun was already going down. I looked out the window and saw land, but had no idea where the hell I was. That was my life for the past month since I left Palermo. I’d woken up wherever God led me because I was too drunk to remember.

“Not sure, but I’ll let you know when I get there. We’ll talk later,Sorella1, OK?”

“Not so fast. How can you not know where you’re going? How hard did you party last night?”

Around me there were empty bottles of outrageously expensive champagne, feathers from a pillow that was murdered in cold blood, my shirt that was drenched in something and stained by red lipstick.

“Hard enough. Grazia, I’m going back to sleep. I’ll be home when I’ll be home.”

“Don’t hang up.” She said with a sad voice that turned me into mush. I loved Grazia, but I didn’t like how easily she could spin me around her finger. I guess that was the privilege of being the only girl in a family full of boys.

“I’m here.” One of the redheads woke up and crooked her finger to call me to her, but I ignored it and went out on the deck of the boat. “Don’t sound so sad.”

“I don’t like what’s happening with you.”

“Nothing is happening.” I said to her. “I’mfine.”

“You are drinking your way through Europe, that doesn’t mean you’re fine.” She sighed into the phone. “When I was in the coma, I could feel you holding my hand. I heard you talk too, Garon. You said you needed me fine, that Ineededto be fine so things would be OK. Well, that goes for you too. Come home,Fratello2.”

Fottere3!

“I can’t. I don’t know what I want to do or where I want to go. I don’t know…”who the fuck I am anymore. I kept that part to myself, like I did for the past twenty years, too afraid of what might happen if I’d let anyone know the truth. “I still need time to clear my head.”

“You don’t have any more time. Giovani wants you to come back and take over some territories.”

I growled. “Why the hell is he talking business with you?”

I couldn’t see her, but I was sure she rolled her eyes.

“I’ve heard him talking to Salvatore. Garon, he wants you involved in the business by the end of the year.”

“Trust me,Sorella, I’m doing him a favor by staying away.”

“We are your family! Why do people keep running from me? First Pina and now you.” She sighed and I cringed, flashbacks of wild table sex rushing to me. “I just want everything to be back the way it was.”

“It will be fine, Grazia. I’ll see you when I get home, OK?”

“Or you could tell me where the hell you are and I could come visit.”

Now, that was a good question.

Where the hell was I?

Rome. Fate had brought me to the Eternal City. Well, according to my captain it wasn’t fate, but more like a bottle of Stoli that made that decision. I ordered them to take me to Italy and they set course to the capital. It could be worse, they could have pulled into the port of Palermo and I didn’t feel like going back to my city.

When we made it to land, I sent the two French redheaded dancers into a hotel by the airport and bought them a plane ticket to get them back home. They were quite disappointed I didn’t join them in the room, but I wasn’t in the mood, and Rome had a lot of other flavors to offer.

I was looking at my phone when Arno and Santo pulled the car to the curb. The two men were part of thefamigliaand Giovani swore that either I take the fuckers to be my bodyguards or he was going to follow me on my vacation himself. Arno was a fixer while Santo was a bruiser, a very good one since he was Goliath’s sparring partner and boxing with that motherfucker was no easy job. Something I would never say in front of Giovani’s face was that it was good thinking to take them with me because they’ve cleaned every mess I’d left behind.

“Car is ready, Boss.” Santo got out of the passenger seat.

“You found one fast.”
