“I get it.” I spat at him. “I won’t do anything.”

“Good girl.” My skin crawled. “We’ll be back in Rome by tomorrow. There is another way out of Sicily through a little dock fifteen minutes away from here. Your father has a boat stashed there and we’ll use it to leave.”

“Why do you keep talking about my father? How do you know about his fishing boat?”

“Oh, Pina, your father came to me. He told me all about Garon Caputo and how he forced you to live with him. Don’t worry, Martino is waiting for us in Rome. We’ll take care of you.”

“I don’t need to be taken care of!” I wheezed, my lungs burning in my chest. “I live with Garon because I love him, because we’re going to have a child together. My father is a liar, a little man with a bruised ego. Don’t play his game, Leonardo.”

“I’m not, I’m only playing mine. Do you know how many bitches I’ve had, Pina? Hundreds.” He laughed and it sounded sinister. “Hell, maybe a thousand. I don’t keep count. They became boring pretty fast. They all open their legs too fast for any man that comes around and I don’t want that. Then you came along and you were pure.”

“Why do you keep saying that? I wasn’t. Garon and I slept together before I ever came to Rome.” Now that information made his face darken. Maybe it wasn’t a smart move to antagonize him, but I didn’t know what else to do. “Look at me. I’m pregnant with another man’s child. There’s nothing pure about me, Leonardo, I’m not what you need. You’ll find someone else. Let me leave, please.”

“No. I can fix you.” He took my hands and I didn’t realize what he wanted until I felt the restrains tightening around my wrists. “I can make you pure again.”

He ran to one of the bags and started pulling things out. At first, the things he pulled out made no sense; he had bandages there, a syringe, all types of medical supplies, but I wasn’t hurt. Finally, he pulled out two metal instruments and I recognized both; a curette and forceps. My stomach revolted against the image and I almost threw up at my feet. The unmistakable cold sweat born from fear slipped down on the back of my head.

When Leonardo turned to me holding the forceps, I felt like I was staring into the face of the devil.

“Everything can be undone, Pina. I’m taking that parasite out of you.”

“No, no please!” Out of desperation, I fell down on my knees at his feet. I was ready to beg or pray for a miracle, anything that could get me out of this situation. With tears rolling down my face I looked up at Leonardo. “I’ll go with you, I’ll do whatever you want, just please—please—don’t hurt my baby.”

“You’ll get another baby when you’re ready. You’re too young to be a mother anyway.”

“Leonardo p-p-please, I am begging you.”

“No. You won’t have another man’s child before I have you. I’m the one who guarded your body in that brothel, I’ll be the one to enjoy it.”

God, how I wanted to take those forceps and put them in his neck. I would have watched the blood gush from him with a smile on my face if it meant it would keep him away from the baby, but my hands were tied and he could overpower me.

In my head I didn’t call to God, but instead I begged for Garon to find me. Someone—anyone—had to find me before it was too late. Before Leonardo would do something worse than death.

“I’ll sleep with you.” I forced myself to say the words through the shallow, rapid breaths. I was slowly slipping into an agonizing panic attack, and I was fighting to stay sane. “If that’s what you want, I’ll sleep with you. I won’t try to stop you, just don’t do anything to hurt the baby.”

“Do you think I’d take any satisfaction from having you used like this? I have to clean you up first, get rid of the…”

“Leonardo, please! You sound insane! Stop, just stop and think about what you’re about to do!”

But it wasn’t my pleas that stopped him, it was the sound of angry tires stopping in front of the house. He grabbed the gun and peeked out the window.

“Fuck!” He cursed. “How did they find me so fast? Martino said this place was safe.”

In that moment, I felt like the heavens opened for me, because whoever was out there, they were my people. Garon had found me. Once again, he was coming to save me.

Leonardo’s phone rang and he looked out the window again before answering.

“Yes. How do you have this number?” An angry, muffled growl, that’s all I could hear from the other end of the line, but I knew it was Garon. A whisper in the wind was all I needed to recognize him. I could feel he was close—he was here—and it made me cry harder, but this time I wasn’t scared, I was just grateful. My love had come for me. “She’s fine. I don’t care, we’re not coming out. I’ll put her on just for you to see she’s fine. Say goodbye, Caputo, you’re not seeing her again.”

He pushed the phone down to my ear.

“H-hello.”

“Piccolina.” He sounded tired and anguished, almost as bad as I was.

“I knew you’d come.” I said through sobs.

“Listen to me, I can see you through the window. Go to the wall behind you and get down, lay flat on the floor.”
