I leaned against the counter in the home where I grew up, watching my girl and my cousin make each other laugh.

I’d been forced away from everything and everyone I’d ever loved, and my own fears and insecurities had kept me gone.

I’d never take one single moment she let me love her for granted.

She was my girl. My everything.

And I couldn’t wait to spend every day making sure she knew it.

Macie + Booker

One Year Later

Macie:I thought living together would mean I got to see you more?

Booker:See there, and I thought living together meant I didn’t have to keep my hand over your mouth while I made you come in my childhood bedroom.

Macie:Your poor momma.

Booker:I’m sorry, baby, I’m stuck waiting on an inspector. I’ve been trying to get him here for weeks and the job is stalled until he signs off.

Macie:It’s okay, I’m actually just getting home. We had parent-teacher conferences that ran late, and then McCall wanted to meet for drinks.

Booker:Says my very pregnant bride who can’t consume alcohol.

Macie:No one likes to drink alone, including our fine town detective.

Booker:You feeling okay? It was a long day for you.

Macie:Nine months pregnant teaching a class full of kindergarteners, and then dealing with their parents makes for a very sleepy Macie Palmer Ruler.

Booker:Mmmmm. I love it when you use that beautiful new name of yours.

Macie:My parents want to have brunch after church on Sunday.

Booker:Oh, they’ve forgiven us? Again?

Macie:Well, we did make it a point to walk down the aisle with this pregnant belly between us.

We were a scandal. The talk of the town. You know my mother hated that.

Booker:She was right though. We did it on purpose.

Macie:It was your dream. I wanted to make it come true for you.

Booker:Touring that new house of ours before it was ready.

Macie:I got a splinter in my ass. But it was worth it.

Booker:Think you can go into labor before Sunday? I’d love to skip that brunch with your pretentious parents.

Macie:Maybe. Why don’t you hurry home and see what you can do to help make that a reality?

Booker:Damn, I love you.
