“I’m going to swing you to it—”

She shook her head, “No! I can’t do it.”

Lane nodded. “You have to, it’s the only way. I won’t let you go until you’ve got a firm grip on it, I promise. Now put your leg over the edge and turn to face me. I’ve got you.”

Shaking with fear, Brit gripped his hand so tight both their knuckles turned white, but she did as she was told.

Lane planted his feet and braced his other hand beside the window frame, knowing her weight would feel like it was going to rip his arm off. “You ready?”

“No...” she squeaked but nodded as she leaned forward and stuck her other leg out.

“On three...two...one.” He watched as he swung with all his might and saw her fingers reaching for the cold metal and missing. Shaking from the toll it was taking on him he grunted and brought her back only to swing her once more. This time she threw her arm over a rung and held on for dear life.

Lane could feel himself starting to slip further out the window. “Got a good hold on it?”

She nodded. “Yeah.”

“Okay. I’m letting go of your hand now.” When she looked at him with pleading eyes, he said, “I’m slipping, if I don’t, we are both going to hit the ground.”

Brit nodded. The second he let go, she grabbed the tower with her other hand.

Lane breathed a sigh of relief. “Once you get on the ground, head that way,” he pointed in the direction of the road. “When you come to the road, go right and follow it until you come to a laneway on the left. You will see a motorcycle, it’s mine. Stay put and I’ll meet you there.”

“Okay,” she nodded.

A crash came from behind followed by Brian yelling. “Britney!Open the door. Now!”

“Go! Now!”

Knowing that Brian most likely had a gun, Lane turned around and kicked one of the wooden posters off the footboard of the bed. He picked it up off the floor as the door smashed open and there stood Brian.

“Who the fuck are you and where is Brit?”

“The man that’s gonna beat the shit out of you and don’t worry about her, she’s safe.”

Taken aback, Brian said, “Oh really?”

Lane said nothing only nodded and motioned for Brian to come to him. “C’mon, you like beating women, come hit someone who will hit you back.”

Brian lunged at him from across the room, giving Lane plenty of time to sidestep him. Brian fell to the floor and that’s when Lane pounced. Dropping the post, Lane grabbed him by the shirt, and drilled him in the face with his other fist not once, but three times.

Brian held up his hands, trying to shield his face and said, “Why are you doing this? Who the hell is Britney to you?”

“She’s nothing to me. On the other hand, Desi is.” Gathering him closer, Lane looked him in the eyes and said, “If you so much as breathe the same air as her again, I’ll kill you. Got it?”

Brian didn’t get a chance to answer because a scream outside the window caught them both off guard. Lane patted Brian on the chest and said, “Stay put.”

As he got up, he stepped squarely on Brian’s groin, then walked over to the window leaving the man howling in agony.

“Sonofabitch,” he muttered as he saw the tower had come loose from the wall and Brit dangling as it bent at a 45-degree angle.

There was no way he would make it down the stairs in time to catch her. His only choice was to drop down to the ground. He just hoped he didn’t break a foot in the fall. Throwing a leg over the sill, he started to climb out the window but stopped when he heard, “Don’t you dare Lane Petersen!”

Looking at the ground, he saw Desi, Luke, Ava, Tim, and Dean and bringing up the rear was a slew of police officers converging over the grounds of the emu farm.

“Go down the stairs,” Luke called up to him. “We will help her.”

Lane nodded, as he pulled his leg inside, he felt an excruciating pain in the other one. Brian had picked up the wooden post and smashed him in the leg with it.
