“And why is that?”

“She was out all night last night.”

I know she knows about that. Hell, people were keeping up with Avery and speculating about us dancing together at the fundraiser. I followed along because I freaked out when she left the house. Without the JSE, I wouldn’t have made it through the night. I would have called Josh and demanded he look for her.

“Yes. And why was that, Jon?”

I look down at her. “I have no idea.”

She rolls her eyes. “You are the worst liar. Just make up with her.”

“What makes you think we had a fight?”

A snort escapes, and my eyes narrow. “Jon, you would never intentionally hurt someone, especially a woman.”

“Haven’t you heard? I’m the worst billionaire to date.”

“Yes, I’m sure you aren’t fun to be around.”

“Rude.”

She throws her head back and laughs. That is so out of character for my grandmother, I blink. “You sound just like Avery when you say that.”

Do I? “I don’t.” But she might be right. Good God, what happens if I start eating sugary cereals and sleeping all day?

Another chuckle slips from her lips, and I frown at her.

“Oh, Jon, you are in for a bit of a reality check and very soon.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“We’ll talk about it later. What do you think of Ted?”

I blink at the change of subject, but I know better than to challenge her. Estella runs every conversation, and everyone else is along for the ride.

“I like him. I checked him out.”

“Yes, as I did.”

“You did?”

“Do you think I would let someone get close to your mother without having a background check done? I care too much for her and for you to let anyone with a sketchy background near you.”

I’m strangely touched. Estella never discusses things like this, and it makes me feel cherished. I know that she approved of me. I make my own way in the world, but I always thought she took a hands-off approach.

“Now, I’m ready for bed. My bones hurt, and there’s rain coming.”

“Not in the forecast.”

Another snort. “I can tell you we will have rain tonight.”

I help her into the car then watch as she heads home. Of course, she came in her own car. Estella likes to be on her own. I think it has a lot to do with her upbringing and constantly being told to let men take care of things. Avery might be right because she mentioned just that last week.

The moment she pops into my mind, I know I must search her out. I have to see if she wants anything more than that kiss.

Unfortunately, as I turn to go, my mother is standing there, a mischievous smile brightening her face. “I thought maybe we could have dessert.”

I glance at Ted, who is looking anywhere but at me. “Is that a fact? Didn’t you have some kind of dessert after dinner?”
