She snorts and then starts laughing. “They wish.”

“Who are they?”

“The Howard family. They think when I go, they will take over.”

“So, what’s going on if you aren’t sick?”

She studies me for a long moment. Then, she says, “Things have happened in the last year or so that have me rethinking things.”

In an instant, I realize what has her talking like this. Nancy and my grandmother always had a tumultuous relationship. Then Nancy was stalked by a former producer, and he almost killed her. I bet that’s what this is all about.

“I thought you didn’t believe in regrets.”

“I have many regrets. How can I not when I married your grandfather? That was the biggest regret of my life, but it turned out well.”

“What do you mean?”

She waves her hand. “After Nancy was in danger, we had some long chats. I realized I was hard on both of you, and she didn’t understand why. It made me think that maybe you didn’t either.”

“I...” I’m at a loss for words, and it takes me a second to get my brain to function. “I never thought you were that hard on me.”

“Are you being honest?”

“I am, but Nancy and I are different. She is also a girl.”

“Women are tougher than men,” she says. “Don’t ever think differently, Jon.”

“I know. Look at my mother.”

“Yes, she was a surprise. A delightful one.” She looks out the window. There’s a butterfly garden right by the big window. I always wondered about it because my grandmother was never the butterfly type. But what do I know? Maybe she is.

Then she looks back at me. “You need to take time to enjoy life.”

“I thought you didn’t like people goofing off.”

“Goofing off, as you call it, is not good if that’s all you do. But taking time off every now and then is important.”

I open my mouth and then snap it shut.

“So, you met Avery last night.”

“We already covered that.”

She sends me a withering glance, and I’m eight years old again, and I just fried her computer.

“What do you think of her?”

“Kind of hard to assess the woman other than she’s very loud and acts before she thinks.”

My grandmother chuckles. “I heard she tackled you.”

“She came flying at me out of the dark.”

“Don’t be overly dramatic.”

There is a tone in her voice that tells me she finds the whole thing amusing.

“Funny, I have a feeling Avery O’Bryan is a bit overly dramatic herself.”
