She sighs. “I’m going to let it go for now. I believe your grandmother is having a dinner tomorrow night that she invited Avery to.”

“She didn’t invite me.”

An eye roll from my mother is not a good thing. “Jonathon Fredrick Howard, stop being so cheeky.”

“Ah, you’ve been watching Doctor Who again.”

She can’t stop the chuckle. “Ted had never seen them before. He loves them now.”

Of course. My mother can convince anyone that it’s the best show in the world. “I’ll be there. Just tell Estella to send me a time to show up.”

I kiss her on the cheek and watch her get into the car with Ted. He waves at me, and I watch them pull out of the parking spot. Someone walks into me, and I turn around. I get the back of a massively built man, at least an inch taller than me, and he looks like he weighs about one hundred to one hundred and fifty pounds more than I do. Oddly, he doesn’t stop to apologize, which is the norm in Juniper.

“Hey, Jon,” Josh says as he steps up next to me. “Got a problem?”

“No. Just…do you know that guy?”

He looks at the man as he gets into the car. “He’s renting the place behind yours.”

“Oh, you agree that it’s my house and that Avery has stolen it.”

“You didn’t act like you had a problem with her last night.”

“What the hell?”

He rolls his eyes, and I’m getting irritated with people doing that to me.

“Everyone noticed you just about took my head off for talking to her. Just know it’s been noticed, and the LOLs will pay attention.”

With that, he heads off in the direction of the diner. Jesus, this town. If I were smart, I would run out of town tonight and avoid all this. Avery would probably rejoice.

Avery.

With her on my mind, I hurry to my car.

ChapterTwenty-Seven

Avery

It’s been an hour since I arrived home, but I can’t seem to settle down. I know, surprising. Benjamin and Meredith seem to be doing really well together, so I can’t even blame my cats for the problem. I just keep walking through the house, my entire body still humming. I don’t think I really want to face the reason for it because then I would have to admit I have a crush on my housemate.

Jon is such a hot man. I mean, who wouldn’t want to jump that? I can see why so many models date him. Sure, some people would say it was his money, and I’m sure that helps. But beneath the surface, there was passion. I felt it just beneath that fussy exterior. That kiss. I stop by the sliding glass door and close my eyes. Every nerve ending in my body goes on alert as a rush of hormones floods my system. My nipples tighten, and I shift my legs. God, just from a kiss, I’m so turned on that I might need the help of my vibrator.

There’s a knock at the door, and I frown. It could be one of the LOLs, but I thought most of them would go toThe Mason Jaror the diner. But you never know when one of them just wants to chat. I step up to the door and look through the peephole. Whoever it is, she has her back to me, but it is definitely a she. A fall of perfectly styled golden curls tumble down her back, which is no easy feat in this humidity. When she turns, I gasp.

How did Sienna know where to find Jon? Also, how dare she show up here? Okay, I don’t have a right to be so irritated by her appearance. All I shared with Jon was one kiss. I’m sure she’s shared a lot more with him.

Now I want to hit her.

“I hear you in there. Answer the door.”

She stomps her foot, and I roll my eyes. Seriously. Models. I’ve worked with a few, especially when starting and needing social media capital. I’m pretty damned dramatic, but nothing compared to a couple of models I’ve worked with.

“I will stay here all night.”

That’s a lie, but there is a tiny part of me worried that if Jon shows up and sees her standing there on the porch, he might think twice about kissing me again. Which is insane because I don’t want to kiss him again.

“Jon,” she whines.
