“Scary, yes, you said that. But it’s imperative. Jon isn’t the man for you. He hates parties and spending time in large groups, and he couldn’t give a shit about fashion.”

“He used me.”

“No. You used each other. Would you have gone after him if he had been Jon Howard computer science teacher?” She shakes her head. “It was mutual, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Another blink. “Yeah, I guess.”

“So, why don’t you head back to Dallas, and I won’t tell him you were here. Unless you want me to?”

She opens her mouth to say something, but the door opens.

“Avery?”

Jon has the worst timing.

“Well, I guess we don’t have a choice now,” I mutter.

He steps into the kitchen, and his gaze narrows in on Sienna. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to win you back, but that’s unimportant.”

He rounds the table to stand by me. Meredith meows at him and looks at him like he hung the freaking moon. Skank.

“It’s not.”

“Jon, be nice. Sienna is a product of a society that has convinced her she needs a man. She doesn’t. She’s a strong woman who can stand on her own two feet.”

“And that’s your analysis?”

“Yes. You know, I do have a degree that helps with this.”

He rolls his eyes. “And I dated her.”

“Oh, please, mansplain stuff to me, Jon.”

I’m readying for an argument because, well, because. I don’t want to look at my reasons too closely. Yes, I do have that sociology degree. It’s not really for self-reflection, though.

“Woah, I think this is where I leave,” Sienna says as she rises from the table. Jesus, with those heels on, she’s almost as tall as Jon.

“I’ll see you to the door,” I say, wanting to escape whatever the hell is going on between Jon and me. “Come on, Meredith.”

Meredith ignores me as she rubs against Jon’s ankles. What a complete skank. Jon leans down and pulls her into his arms. I frown at him but want to ensure that Sienna leaves, so I hurry after her.

“Thanks, Avery.”

“Any time. Find me on social media if you need any more chats.”

She offers me a friendly smile, and I see the girl then. The ordinary girl who just wants to be accepted, just like the rest of us.

“Sure thing.”

I stand on the porch and watch her leave, and it has nothing to do with the fact that I’m avoiding Jon. At all.

Once her taillights disappear around the corner, I’m forced to go and talk to Jon. Because while I hoped he would hide in his room, I know better. He’s sitting in the kitchen waiting for me, probably with Meredith.

And while I’m at it, I wonder where Creepy Neighbor Dude is? He hasn’t been out at all.

I step back into the house. It’s quiet. I peek into the kitchen, but it’s empty. Frowning, I turn out the light and head to the living room. There’s a pool of light from the lamp beside the sofa. And there, with Meredith in his lap, sits the man who has been giving me problems for the last ten days.
