“What?”

“Oh, no. This is a very peopley day for you, Jon,” Avery says.

“She definitely wants you there, too,” my mother says to Avery, who smiles.

“Two dinners at the Big House!”

My mother chuckles. After I get a kiss from my mother and a handshake from Ted, they head off.

We get in the car, mainly because I know Avery wants to get home to the cats. The whole way home, she’s quiet again, smiling and looking out the window. When I pull into the driveway, I look over at her. She’s a puzzle, and I’m not sure I will ever have all the pieces to completely understand her.

“What? Do I have food on me? That is just something you have to get used to because I get food on myself all the time. I mean, with these boobs, it’s hard not to.”

Of course, that makes me glance at her chest, and my entire body goes hot. The memory of her gasping my name as I dragged my teeth over them sends a shaft of heat straight to my dick. Fuck, I have never been this out of control. At least not since I turned eighteen. Now, I seem to have no control over my body where Avery is concerned.

“What makes you think I’m a good man?”

“Uh, you care about your mother, your cousin, and whether you want to admit it or not, you care about your grandma.”

“She is not agrandmatype.”

She snorts. “What type is a grandma type?”

“Bakes cookies. And she’s nice.”

“So, to you, every grandma is supposed to be a jovial baker.”

I hear the laughter in her voice, and I shake my head.

“You must admit that she’s not the traditional grandmother type.”

She cocks her head, studying me. “You know, because you’re sexy, I’ll let you slide on that one, but I want to explain something to you.”

“What do you mean let me slide?”

“I was about to explain that.”

“Well?”

She rolls her eyes. “Don’t put women in boxes. Your grandmother may not be the baking cookies type, but she does other things to ensure you have a good life. She runs the Howard Dynasty, which I know isn’t easy. And she loves you in her own way. She’s always bragging about you to the other LOLs. It’s just…I don’t think she knows how to show affection. When you think about it, it’s kind of sad.”

A lump forms in my throat. I never looked at Estella that way, but being with my bastard grandfather did a number on her.

“Let’s go in. It’s a bit warm out today to sit in the car.”

She hops out of the car and heads to the house. It takes me a second or two to follow her. The cats practically pounce on us when we step into the house. After giving them both treats, Avery smiles at me.

“I wasn’t putting my grandmother in a box. It’s just that I don’t see people calling Estella grandma. She’s the grandmother type. She told me to call her that when I was younger.”

She nods. “She likes people to think that, but she’s cooler than you think.”

I want to know what the hell she means by that, but I can’t get distracted. I need to know.

“I want to know why you think I’m a good man.”

“You don’t think you’re a good man?”

“I…”
