“His real name isn’t that much better. But he got a slap on the wrists and lost his football scholarship.”

“What is his original fucking name?” Even though I know what it was and why he was watching our house. It has nothing to do with me and everything to do with Avery.

“Chet Baxter.”

I don’t say anything. I just hang up and stop when I see Trev’s rental blocking my car.

I turn to yell at him, but he’s right behind me. “Let’s go.”

I nod and hurry over to his car. “Head to Juniper.”

He nods as I try calling Avery. I need to know that she’s okay and to hear her voice. Her voicemail picks up, but that’s probably nothing. I mean, millennials don’t like talking on the phone. Right? We hate it.

“Tell me what’s going on.” Trev is speeding along the road that leads into Juniper.

“Avery, you were right. Chet is Norman. He’s there for you. Lock all the doors. I’m on my way home.”

I text her the message I just left in the voicemail in case she doesn’t check her voicemail.

“What is this all about?”

I glance over at Trev. “Avery had an old boyfriend she turned in to the police about eight years ago. Even though not much happened to him, he lost his football scholarship. He’s apparently been stalking her since she moved into my house.”

“Fuck.”

I call Josh.

“Collins.”

“Josh, it’s Jon. Avery might be in trouble.”

“Listen, Jon, I get it. You want to believe her—”

“I do believe her.”

“Just because she’s your woman doesn’t mean I have to believe her.”

My woman. I like that.

“No. Norman Adamsisan old boyfriend of hers. She told me about him.”

“Then why didn’t she tell me that.”

“I have a feeling it’s because he changed his name and, more than likely, looks different than he did eight years ago. His name was Chet Baxter. He legally changed it. And I’m worried. I’m on my way to our house, but she’s not picking up. She hasn’t read my text message either.”

“You’re driving right now?”

“No. My friend is with me. He’s driving. And it might be nothing, but I think something’s really wrong. If I’m wrong, I’ll apologize, but I might need backup.”

“On my way.”

I hang up just as Trev hits the city limits. I just pray we get there in time.

ChapterThirty-Four

Avery

I’m finally getting some work done. Good sex and sleep with my sexy nerd are good for my work mind. I’ve been chatting with a few clients and checking in with them. My sister-in-law’s brother Austin is having a meltdown. He’s gorgeous and a charmer, but he freezes up when he tries to do live broadcasts on his social media.
