“Get your mouth off my sister.”

I pull back and look at the newest visitors. Liv is there, her kids, and a new person. He’s dark-haired like the sisters, and he has the same nose as Avery.

“Go get bent, Fritz.”

“Yeah, quit being a Fritz,” Liv says, but hiccups. She is barely holding it together.

Her brother strides over to the other side of the bed. “Seriously? Didn’t I teach you how to defend yourself?”

Avery opens her mouth, but I refuse to let him talk to her like that. “If you can’t be nice, you will leave this room.”

Fritz blinks. “Excuse me?”

“Avery has a concussion. You need to stop being a…” I look at the kids, “jerk.”

“Yeah, Fritz,” Callie says, walking closer, slipping between Fritz and the bed. She takes her aunt’s hand. “He’s just afraid. All men act like that when they can’t control things.”

Avery laugh-snorts, but there’s a little sob at the end.

“And how did she get a concussion?” Fritz is being loud, and I can see it’s hurting her head.

“Avery has a headache.”

He frowns and crosses his arms over his chest. “Yeah, and whose fault is that?”

“Stop being an ass, Fritz.” This comes from Avery. “It was Chet Baxter.”

Fritz’s eyes narrow. “You mean the guy you turned in?”

“Yeah.” She glances at the kids, and I see Fritz nod in understanding. She doesn’t want to upset the kids, and he finally seems to get it.

There’s a knock at the door, and Francie Miller, a no-nonsense nurse who runs the ER like she’s a general, comes to an abrupt stop.

“What is going on here?”

“Family,” Fritz says.

Her gaze takes in the entire group before landing on me. “They’re family?”

I nod.

“Okay. I guess it doesn’t matter since you are being discharged.”

“Finally,” Avery says.

“I know the doc talked to you about staying awake for a while.” She looks at me. “If she gets dizzy again or throws up, I need you to bring her back here.”

“Why is she giving you the instructions?” Fritz asks. He’s getting on my last nerve.

“Because I’ll be the one taking care of her.”

He opens his mouth, but Liv stops him. “You’re being loud, and Avery has a headache.” She walks over to kiss Avery on the cheek, handing her a bag. It’s the clothes I asked her sister to bring. “We’ll see you in a sec. I’m glad you’re okay.”

Avery smiles at her, a sheen of tears in her eyes. “I am too.”

The kids give her hugs, and Fritz kisses her forehead. “You scared us. Don’t do that again.”

Liv herds them all out of the room. Once Avery signs all the discharge papers, we are finally by ourselves.
