“She told me when I called her to tell her what happened last night.”

“You called her to tell her you let someone move into my house?”

“No, Jonathon. I called to tell her you were taken down by a small woman. She found it very amusing.”

Nancy snorts. “She thought it was hilarious.”

“Wait, has everyone talked to my mother?”

“I haven’t,” Travis says.

He glares at me, his blue eyes sparking with irritation. My nipples get hard from just that look. What the hell, nipples? I cross my arms over my breasts so he doesn’t see.

“I don’t even know your mamma.”

For a long moment, he stares at me, his gaze dropping down to my mouth, then quickly back up. Oh, no. My entire body lights up like the lights on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. I shift in my seat and almost groan. My panties are damp, and my lady parts are begging for attention from Jon.

Months of my libido being dormant seem to have ended. What the hell, libido?

“Jon, I talk to your mother regularly. I want to know why you didn’t know she had a man in her life?”

Jon’s head whips around, and I laugh.

“She’s got you there.”

“Shut up.”

“Jonathon Michael Howard, you willnotspeak to my guest like that.”

“It’s okay, Estella. You know how some men have issues with being questioned.”

She nods as she looks at me with a small smile. Our friendship started over nibbles at midnight at the Mystic Diner. We share one affliction, insomnia. I went there to keep from waking up my sister and her kids. Estella went because she loves milkshakes and didn’t want anyone to know.

Jon looks between us and opens his mouth, but Bessie walks in with our entrées. Platters of catfish and bowls of roasted potatoes and coleslaw are left on the table.

Once we’re alone, we all get our food.

“Are we going to talk about my house?” Jon asks.

Another snort from Nancy, and I glance over. She winks.

“Let’s finish eating, then we can talk.”

He sighs but says nothing else.

We dig into our food, and the talk turns to the JSE and other things, Nancy and Travis’ wedding plans being one. It sounds like a lot of work. I like weddings, don’t get me wrong. I love cake, and I love pretty things. It’s just that a gathering with a bunch of people makes my skin crawl.

I haven’t always been like that. But in the last few months, it’s gotten harder to deal with tons of people at once. I can handle it sometimes, and it does seem easier these last few days with Meredith.

“Is there a reason your cat seems to have adopted me?”

I look over at Jon and shrug. “She usually hates men. I mean, she hissed at Travis, and he’s hot.”

“Thanks,” Travis says happily. I smile at him. He’s a good guy, and many people think he’s stupid because he’s pretty. Well, not like Jon. Jon looks like a movie star, kind of pretty. He’s scowling at me right now, and I just want to ruffle his hair so his curls pop out again like they were last night.

“Hey, Jon,” Travis says.

He pulls his gaze away from me, and I can take a deep breath finally. The only problem is that I pull in some of his scent again, then try my best not to get dizzy.
